- Letter from LP to Dr. Irvin Fuhr, Executive Secretary, Biophysics and Biophysical Cehmistry and Study Section, Division of Research Grants, National Institute of Health, RE: Ephraim Katchalsi's project on the physical-chemical and biological properties of water-soluble poly-alpha- amino acids seems first-rate. The proposed work, as well as Katchalsi's past work, represent a significant contribution to the field of protein structure. The Weizmann Institute laboratory is well-equipped. The amount of grant requested is reasonable, especially because salaries of investigators are lower in Rehovet than in the U.S. [Letter from Fuhr to LP August 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (National Institute of Health)), #285.3]

Dear Alex:
I was interested to receive your letter of 28 August, especially since the 27 August issue of NATURE has not yet arrived in Pasadena.
Your proposed structure for trigonal polyglycine (polyglycine II) looks good to me. When your letter arrived I thought that it referred to a structure that I had constructed once, but on checking over my models I find that such a model is not at hand, and I think that probably my memory confused it with structure 17 described by Corey and me in our paper in Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. U.S., 37, 729 (1951). This is a tetragonal structure with a = 4.8 A and c = 10.4 A, composed of helixes with four residues per turn. We said in the publication that the structure is "not suited to formation of intramolecular or intermolecular hydrogen bonds (except possibly for polyglycine only, in a tetragonal framework with a = 4.8 A)." The calculated density is 1.58, approximately the same as for your structure.
I am glad to hear that your RNA work is going along well, and also that you have been seeing Peter and Linda.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

- Letter from LP to Dr. Samuel Soloveichik, RE: Interested to read LP's manuscript on Oxidation Stages of Organic Aliphatic Compounds. Confused by some of Soloveichik's ideas. Thinks that Soloveichik needs to define his concept of oxidation stages more precisely. Suggests that Soloveichik begin with a definition of oxidation number, and by using the electronegativity scale, introduce some change that is satisfactory to Soloveichik. Dissatisfied with Soloveichik's system because it treats one of the two carbon atoms in cyanogen differently from the other. [Letter from Soloveichik to LP August 31, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]

- Letter from R. Viswanathan, Director General of Health Services, New Delhi, India, to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: Drs. Perry and Lippman are undoubtedly well-qualified. However, it will be difficult to assign them to any paid post. Suggests that they come to India through some International Agency like T.C.M. or the Rockefeller Foundation. No foreign doctors are allowed to come to India for private practice. They could do teaching and research only for a while, but they still would not be able to be paid by an Indian institution. There is also the question of recognition by the Indian Medical Council of American degrees, since there is no reciprocal recognition so far. - Letter from Dr. E. Bright Wilson to Dr. Martin Karplus, RE: Material from LP was held at Harvard for Wilson so he is unable to comment on it now. Will write to McGraw-Hill and request their views on the length, amount per page, etc. Increased length would not matter, but would not like to see the price increase. Certain parts of the book should be changed completely, including Chapter 2, perturb theory, and radiation. Suggests changing the examples for classical mechanics. May need something to underpin the wave equation. Must have matrices and operators early in the book. Perturbation theory is much simpler in terms of the energy matrix. Hopes that the revised edition will give the student a broader coverage of the fundamentals without sacrificing the approach suitable for beginners. When Wilson returns, he will write to both LP and Karplus on his reactions to LP's comments. Wonders if Karplus is in the army yet. 13 September 1955
Mr. W. H, Freeman
549 Market Street
San Francisco, Calif.
Dear Bill:
I enclose the answers to problems in the second edition of COLLEGE CHEMISTRY, typed in form to permit direct photographic reproduction.
While working on the solution of the exercises, a point was brought to my attention that I had noticed before, but had, I think, omitted to tell you about. This is that the paper in the second edition of COLLEGE CHEMISTRY seems to me to bend too easily. I have trouble in turning pages; each page that I try to turn bends, instead of turning. Probably in the next printing you should use slightly stiffer paper.
Also, in the copies that I have there are quite a number of letters that have not printed properly. I think that I mentioned before that there are a good number of letters that have printed more heavily than normal; for example, one in the second line on page 4, one in the first line of the second paragraph on page 5, one in the fourth line on page 6, one in the second line of the second paragraph on page 6, and so on. But also there are a good number that have not printed heavily enough, sometimes in such a way as to cause trouble in reading. An example is the number 3 in exercise 9-16 on page 195. Professor Allen read this as 1.56, instead of 1.53, so that his copy of the book shows the same defect as mine. In general, this printing seems to me not to be quite so well done as the earlier ones.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
Encl.

- Letter from W.H. Freeman, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, to LP RE: Thanks LP for the answers to the revision of College Chemistry. Has sent LP's letter regarding the printing quality and the weight of the paper to Stanley Schaefer. As to the printing being inferior, Freeman is afraid this is due to the rushed production schedule. Hopefully, Schaefer will have LP's letter in time to make the printers do a better job on the third imprint. As to the weight of the paper, cannot go back to the fifty-five pound paper because it is no longer made. Does not suggest using a heavier paper, as so many students have complained about the weight of introductory science books. If there are any complaints on the paper, will consider a heavier weight. - Letter from Dr. Clarence E. Rupe, Secretary, International Symposium on Enzymes, to LP RE: Finds that in their last exchange of letters, both he and LP refer to 12:15 AM on November 1 as the departing time from Detroit. Thinks they both understood that the flight leaves 15 minutes into November 2, arriving in Los Angeles at 8 AM on November 2. Requests that LP's secretary check on those reservations. Due to the large expected audience, LP's address will be held in the Statler Ball Room. Wonders what projection equipment LP will need and whether he will use a blackboard. It is interesting that we should have met by accident more than once. My wife and I could have told you, when we were on the plane, that it seemed likely that the Swedish Academy would make the decision that it did make a couple of days later—apparently the competition was such that members of the Swedish Academy felt that they could predict the result of the balloting, and the news had leaked out already; but, of course, it was uncertain, and we might have been tempting fate by having a celebration prematurely..." Dr. C. B. Anfinsen, Jr., Chief
Laboratory of Cellular Physiology
and Metabolism
National Heart Institute
Bethesda 14, Maryland
Dear Dr. Anfinsen:
I am pleased to have your letter of 13 September, and to learn about your interest in the symposium on the molecular basis of biological specificity that will be held in Washington, under the auspices of the Office of Naval Research, on 28 and 29 October.
I think that Dr. Orr Reynolds of ONR will make an announcement about the conference before long, and of course we hope that you, as well as Drs. Hirs, Moore, and Stein, will attend. I myself am looking forward to the conference - I think that there should be some very interesting discussion about the general problem of biological specificity.
I am also glad to learn about the work that you have
done with Hirs, Moors, and Stein on ribonucleic. It is fine
that you have made great progress in determining the complete
sequence of amino acid residues in the molecule and also the
disulfide cross-linkages. It is not clear to me whether it
would be appropriate to describe this work at our conference,
and I should like to have your advice about it. In general, I
expect that problems of configuration of polypeptide chains in
proteins and sequence of amino acid residues will be discussed
only to the extent that, they are immediately pertinent to the
problem of biological specificity - there is, of course, no
doubt that they are fundamental to the specificity of protein
molecules, but in general we do not have insight into the way
in which they determine it. Please let me know whether you feel
that your results are of such a nature as to have rather direct
bearing on the problem, and whether you and your co-workers
would, in this case, be willing to present an account of the work.
I may say that we are not planning to have other work on sequence
of amino acid residues presented.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

- Letter from Hugh W. Handsfield, Editor, College Dept., McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., to LP and Martin Karplus RE: Professor E. Bright Wilson wrote to Handsfield concerning the size of the new edition of Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Handsfield suggests limiting the book to 500 pages, as anything longer will make the book too expensive for students. Also suggests enlarging the type page measure to fit more text on each page. Wonders if he can expect to see some sample material from the revised manuscript before LP and Karplus undertake the final typing job. Will send additional sets of cut pages if needed. - Letter from Professor E. Bright Wilson, Jr., Chemistry Dept., Harvard University, to LP and Dr. Martin Karplus, Chemistry Dept., University of Illinois, RE: Has seen the letter from Handsfield about the size. Now prepared to comment on LP and Karplus' ideas for revision. Believes that the classical mechanics chapter should be altered. The chapter on the old quantum theory should be drastically revised. The wave equation needs some underpinning. Strongly believes that the book is for chemists and not for mathematicians; mathematics should be used as needed and not too heavily. Feels that a great weakness in the book is the lack of the matrix approach. Thinks the selection rule chapter dealing with interaction of radiation and matter could be improved. Dear Linus:
Never has a chance remark of mine turned out so well as my mention to you some years ago during our railroad journey from Denver to Chicago of the phenomenon of birefringence when sickle cells are deoxygenated that had been observed by Sherman. I mention it now only because I have more than once heard of your generosity and circumspection in referring to this conversation when you gave spoken on the subject of your magnificent work and that of your associates in sickle cell disease. The latest evidence of such kindness has just come to my attention in the opening sentence of Dr. Itano's excellent Minot lecture. That I have not written to express my admiration of your work and to thank you for your repeated reference to my small part in suggesting it, has been due only to the expectation that I should shortly be able to thank you in person. Dr. Itano's words do, however, cause me to feel that a word of thanks is long overdue.
Because of your obvious interest in the antecedent history of "molecular disease", I am enclosing a copy of a rough draft of an introduction that I recently wrote for consideration by my associate, Dr. John Harris, for the opening words of a paper that we are hoping shortly to produce on the pathologic physiology of sickle cell disease and its congeners. I am sure you will be as fascinated as I to read the pioneer observations of Hahn and Gillepsie. These paragraphs of mine also mention some other less relevant items, some of which you might possibly have missed because they are in clinical journals or otherwise somewhat veiled from scientific scrutiny.
I gather that we shall shortly both attend the meeting of the scientific advisors of the Massachusetts General Hospital (December 17th) and am looking forward to seeing you then.
With kindest regards.
Sincerely yours,
William B. Castle, M. D.

Dear Paul:
In answer to your report of 12 September 1955 on the Acta Crystallographica situation, I am writing to say that I approve in general of your proposal. I believe that it should be possible to find two good men who would serve on the editorial staff, and that this arrangement would, contribute significantly to the solution of the problem.
I have talked with Dr. Hughes about the possibility of his serving as one of the American editors. Dr. Hughes has told me that he would be willing to serve in this capacity if a suitable plan could be-devised for splitting the work between him and Fankuchen, in such a way that each would have specifically designated responsibility and authority.
It is my opinion that Dr. Hughes, with the aid of the rather many other x-ray crystallographers in Pasadena and closely adjacent communities (Trueblood and McCullough at UCLA, Donohue at University of Southern California) could handle a large part of the American editorial problem, and perhaps to some extent that of the Pacific region. Dr. Hughes has pointed out to me, for example, that there is a special problem about Japanese papers that Professor Nitta may not be in a position to handle satisfactorily; namely, that of revising the manuscripts in such a way as to render them into colloquial scientific English.
I am looking forward to seeing you next week.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
