- Letter from Dr. William B. Munro, Collis P. and Howard Huntington Memorial Hospital, to LP RE: Pleased to hear that LP was able to attend the recent (Evening of Science at the Huntington Hospital. Munro was not able to attend, but wonders if LP thinks that these evening affairs are worthwhile. Wonders how they can be improved. No particular expense to the Hospital and a certain number of the public seem to enjoy the evenings. Dear Dr. Anfinsen:
I am pleased to have your letter of 13 September, and to learn about your interest in the symposium on the molecular basis of biological specificity that will be held in Washington, under the auspices of the Office of Naval Research, on 28 and 29 October.
I think that Dr. Orr Reynolds of ONR will make an announcement about the conference before long, and of course we hope that you, as well as Drs. Hirs, Moore, and Stein, will attend. I myself am looking forward to the conference - I think that there should be some very interesting discussion about the general problem of biological specificity.
I am also glad to learn about the work that you have
done with Hirs, Moors, and Stein on ribonucleic. It is fine
that you have made great progress in determining the complete
sequence of amino acid residues in the molecule and also the
disulfide cross-linkages. It is not clear to me whether it
would be appropriate to describe this work at our conference,
and I should like to have your advice about it. In general, I
expect that problems of configuration of polypeptide chains in
proteins and sequence of amino acid residues will be discussed
only to the extent that, they are immediately pertinent to the
problem of biological specificity - there is, of course, no
doubt that they are fundamental to the specificity of protein
molecules, but in general we do not have insight into the way
in which they determine it. Please let me know whether you feel
that your results are of such a nature as to have rather direct
bearing on the problem, and whether you and your co-workers
would, in this case, be willing to present an account of the work.
I may say that we are not planning to have other work on sequence
of amino acid residues presented.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

- Letter from LP to Dr. Charles Allen Thomas RE: Thanks for letter of last January of congratulations on Nobel Prize. [Filed under LP Awards: 1954h3.19]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Friedrich Helfferich, Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry, Germany, RE: Pleased with the page proofs of the German edition of General Chemistry. Glad that Helfferich has decided to use the word "orbital" in German. Looks forward to seeing the translation of his preface and seeing Helfferich's preface. Agrees that the other prefaces for the American edition should be omitted. - Letter from LP to Dr. H. S. Rogers, President, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Informs that he is looking forward to the Centennial Convocation. Discusses when his reservation should begin. [Letter from Rogers to LP September 14, 1955 [Filed under LP Awards: 1955h.6]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Robert Stollberg, President, National Science Teachers Association, RE: Wrote to LP a month ago, inviting him to be the Banquet Speaker at the Fourth Annual convention of the National Science Teachers Association. Realizes that LP may have been away for all or part of the summer, and that his correspondence may have piled up. Repeats the body of the letter. [Letter from Stollberg to LP August 5, 1955, October 5, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
- Letter from LP to Herbert S. Bailey, Jr., Princeton University Press, RE: Has not yet started preparing the Vanuxem Lectures for publication. Has delayed in signing the contract because he would like to propose an arrangement with Roger Hayward to illustrate the book. Will write to Bailey about the contract after talking with Hayward. - Letter from LP to J. Trevor Brown, Princeton University Press, RE: Prefers to wait until he has made more progress on the manuscript of the book (covering the subject matter of his Vanuxem Lectures) before filling out the sales promotion form. [Letter from Brown to LP September 15, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1954s.19]
- Letter from LP to Professor P. P. Ewald, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Informs that he and AHP are looking forward to visiting the University in a few weeks. States he will have dinner with them if it does not conflict with formal affairs. [Filed under LP Awards: 1955h.6]
- Letter from LP to Professor Ralph Emerson, Botany Dept., University of California, Berkeley, RE: Regrets that he cannot speak at the Biology Seminar at Berkeley on November 11, as he has already committed to so much travel this year and wants to stay quiet about that time. Has already agreed to come to Berkeley for a couple of weeks in January and February to give lectures in chemistry. Will probably discuss the structure of proteins, hemoglobin, and similar topics at one of these lectures; perhaps this might take the place of the seminar Emerson had in mind. - Memo from LP to Professor E.W. Hughes, Gates and Crellin Laboratories, California Institute of Technology RE: Report on Acta Crystallographica situation is attached. Wonders if Hughes might consider being recommended as second American editor for the publication. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Organizational Correspondence (Ac-Ad)), #7.6]
- Memo from Professor E.W. Hughes, Gates and Crellin Laboratories, California Institute of Technology to LP RE: Would be glad to serve as second American editor for Acta Crystallographica if suitable arrangement can be made with Fankuchen.
