- Letter from LP to Martin B. Williams, RE: The Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering offers several Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Describes the details of these positions. The division requires three years of residence to obtain a Ph.D. after a bachelor's degree, but it has turned out that men with master's degrees have also had to spend three years because the Division's emphasis is somewhat different from that of other universities. Very little work in business administration is offered at Caltech. Suggests that Williams attend some other school, such as Purdue or a mid-western state university. [Letter from Williams to LP July 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]

3 August 1955
Dr. E. F. G. Herrington
Chemical Research Laboratory
Teddington, Middlesex, England
Dear Dr. Herrington:
I have been interested to read your letter in Nature of 9 July 1955, entitled "A New Class of Compounds Containing the Pentacyanoferrate Group and an Unpaired Electron." In this letter you say that the iron is present in the bivalent state, and that the nitrogen atom carries an unpaired electron. I do not see why you have not described these compounds as involving iron in the trivalent state, with the pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom, in place of the unpaired electron. If an electron were to be transferred from bivalent iron in nitrogen, the iron would increase its oxidation number by one unit and the nitrogen atom would have a pair of electrons, in place of the single electron. So far as I can see, you do not have any evidence in support of the structure that you have described, over the more reasonable structure with tripositive iron and a pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:L
- Letter from LP to Dr. Harrison Shull, Chemistry Dept., Institute of Mechanics and Mathematical Physics, Uppsala University, Sweden, RE: Interested to see Shull's letter with Dr. Lowdin, in the Journal of Chemical Physics on the Role of the Continuum in Superposition of Configurations. Describes the history of the complete set of orthogonal functions which Shull describes in the letter. Langer's work is an early example of an error caused by neglect of the continuum functions. - Letter from Professor H.C. Longuet-Higgins, Chemical Laboratory, University of Cambridge, to LP RE: Agrees that the possibility of the closed-shell tetragonal structure for elementary boron should not be excluded until the necessary calculations are made. However, feels quite confident about the hypothesis in view of calculations made on the calcium boride system. Encloses the paper which describes this in detail. Does not feel that any simple conclusion can be drawn regarding the electronic structure from the observed bond lengths. Will be interested to hear if LP's calculations on calcium boride lead the similar conclusions. Wonders whether the topic of the molecular changes attending the transformation of precursors of proteolytic enzymes to their active forms would be suitable. Indicates particular compounds which he would consider. Wonders what other papers in the enzyme field will be given and what kind of audience is expected. Open to suggestions if the topic he proposed is not satisfactory. [Letter from West to LP August 3, 1955, Letter from LP to Neurath August 16, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.24]
- Letter from Professor J.B.S. Haldane, University College, London, to LP RE: While Haldane does not study mental deficiency, his colleague L.S. Penrose is an expert on it. The trouble with mongolism is that there are structural abnormalities in the hand and maybe in the brain. Believes that one would likely find biochemical abnormality in the mother and child during the second or third month of pregnancy. However, mothers that are going to bear mongol children cannot be identified. In a postscript, asks for LP's opinion on the validity of a statement regarding erythrocytes and hemoglobin. Professor J. A. Campbell
Oberlin College
Oberlin, Ohio
Dear Campbell:
This letter is to thank you for your letter of 9 December, with your congratulations on the Nobel Prize. My wife and I had a fine time in Stockholm and on our trip around the world. We enjoyed especially visiting in India, Thailand, and Japan - also Israel.
As to the matter of driving a ship into the teeth of a gale, I want to repeat that I think that the English graduate student was right. I myself believe that I have shown that a ship can be driven into the teeth of a gale by knotting a windmill on it and coupling it to the propeller. By this I mean, as you say in your letter, motion in a direction at l80° to the direction of the wind. Perhaps you would care to give me the proof that it is impossible, in order that I might check, and find out whether or not I have made a mistake.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:L
- Letter from Professor Fred T. Wall, William Albert Noyes Laboratory, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Dept., University of Illinois, to LP RE: Delighted that LP has decided to lecture at Illinois in the spring. Has made a tentative reservation for LP and AHP at the Illinois Union. Provides calendar with recommended dates for lectures and possible alternatives. Calendar takes into consideration the various meetings that members of the fields of physical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and physics will be attending. Wonders if LP would like to have the lectures published in monograph form. Reluctant to inform LP that he must sign a non-communist oath prior to his "employment" as a visiting lecturer at Illinois. Dear Haldane:
I thank you for your letter, and the reference to the book by Penrose, which I have not yet read. I shall get hold of it as soon as I can.
I am glad to hear your argument about the synthesis of molecules of hemoglobin - 2 x 108 molecules made by one gene in less than 106 seconds. I agree with you that is is [sic] unlikely that a single gene could manufacture hemoglobin molecules directly at the rate of 200 per second. Accordingly, I think that your suggestion that the gene synthesizes a thousand or so molecules that then act as templates for hemoglobin synthesis is a reasonable one.
On the other hand, I am not sure that you may conclude that the gene itself may be like a part of a hemoglobin molecule in shape. First, it seems to me not unlikely that protein molecules in general are synthesized in the form of extended polypeptide chains, which coil up into a stable configuration after separation from the template. Perhaps the process of coiling, with its formation of hydrogen bonds, provides the energy for pulling the polypeptide chain away from the template. Similarly, the template itself, postulated to be synthesized by the gene, might be synthesized in a configuration different from that that it assumes in order to serve as a template, for example, the gene, a molecule of deoxyribosenucleic acid, might serve as the template for the synthesis of the template, a molecule of ribose nucleic acid, in the extended form, and this RNA template molecule might then coil into a different configuration, to serve as the template for the manufacture of hemoglobin.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:L

Understands that the AAAS may not wish to engage in a campaign of defiance against local prejudicial regulations. However, it would be an intelligent and legal protest to hold the meetings in a city where discrimination is not required. To Dr. Murayama From Linus Pauling Date 18 August 1955
Subject Proposed Research on Human Hemoglobin
H. G. Kunkel and G. Wallenius, Science 122, 288 (1955), have reported finding a new hemoglobin in normal adult human blood. This hemoglobin when subjected to electrophoresis in a starch slab, barbital buffer of pH 8.6, migrates less than half as fast as A. Under these conditions it migrates equivalently to E. They report a range of 1.8-3.5% of this hemoglobin, relative to A, in individuals with various chronic diseases.
In addition, they report that normal adult blood shows small amounts of hemoglobin migrating more rapidly than A.
They have isolated part of these hemoglobins (the rapid one is supposed to be heterogeneous).
I think that it is possible that these new hemoglobins represent errors in polypeptide-chain synthesis by the normal gene. I propose that we investigate them with this in mind. Perhaps only the more rapid hemoglobin is of this type.
I suggest that as a first step you repeat some of the work of Kunkel and Wallenius. I propose then to get blood from patients in Pacific State Hospital, in order that the amounts of the new hemoglobins can be determined.
I think that you should isolate some of the new hemoglobins, and we might ask Dr. Rhinesmith to investigate their end groups. It may be worth while to try to so a better job of fractionation of the faster component than was done by Kunkel and Wallenius.

From: Linus Pauling
Subject: Revision of Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
Here are my comments on your preliminary suggestion about the revision of the book.
I think that the revision that you propose is more extensive than we want. In particular, you propose great changes in the first few chapters. I think that these chapters should be retained, with some small changes and perhaps some additions.
In general, I think that we should proceed on the assumption that everything in the book as it stands now (as written twenty years ago) has been shown to be good by the fact that the book has been widely used. I suggest that we retain the present structure of the book and the present material in each chapter, unless a good argument can be presented to justify a change. I do not think that any section of chapter should be rewritten unless there is such an argument.
Also, I do not think that we should adopt the policy of rewriting the book in the way that a mathematician would – that is, of deriving early in the book (by matrix methods, say) some valuable theorems, and then making later discussions as succinct as possible with use of these theorems. Instead I favor deriving the theorems at the place where they are used. For example, you suggest revising the discussion of many-electron atoms by basing it upon previously derived theorems; I should prefer to have the theorems derived here.
You also suggest doing first and second order perturbation theory and degenerate theory in the same formulation. I think that there is an advantage to taking these up in succession, for the sake of clarity and emphasis, even though the treatment is less efficient.
I suggest that you check through the chapters and suggest deletions, changes, and additions.
We have agreed that something about matrices and general quantum mechanics should be introduced rather early. I think that your suggestion of a brief discussion of simple experiments showing duality of matter and light, uncertainty principle, complementarity, etc., may be introduced early, and suggest the end of Chapter 2 and the beginning of Chapter 3 as the proper place.
In Chapter 12 you suggest leaving out the Burrau treatment. I think that this treatment should be retained, partially because of its historical significance, but also because it involves the introduction of confocal elliptic coordinates.
You also suggest leaving out the treatment of the helium molecule ion, the interaction of two normal helium atoms, and the discussion of the one-electron bond, the electron-pair bond, and the three-electron bond. These matters seem to me to be important.
Your suggestions about other topics – virial theorem and applications, Feynman theorem and applications, solid state theory, book list – seem to me to be excellent. I agree that probably the section on statistical mechanics should be deleted.

- Letter from LP to Dr. Noyes D. Smith, Jr., Chairman, API Clay Clay Project Review Committee, Shell Development Company, RE: Interested to read Smith's suggestion that he carry out work directed toward understanding the mechanisms of transformations occurring during the development of clay-type layer lattice silicates for the API. For a few years around 1930, Caltech studied the silicate minerals and determined the structure of kaolinite, mica, chlorite, and some others. However, Caltech has not continued work in this field. Believes that it would not be wise for Caltech to compete with able investigators who have been devoting themselves to this work. Thus, LP will not be preparing a proposal. - Letter from Dr. Alexander Rich, Cavendish Laboratory, Physics Dept. University of Cambridge, to LP RE: Read an article on polyglycine II, a new form of polypeptide, in the August 27th issue of Nature. Rich and Francis Crick developed the idea of using a 3-fold screw axis with polyglycine, thereby forming a series of parallel polypeptides connected by an infinite network of hydrogen bonds normal to the axis. Found that they could build such a model and that it would fit the experimental data. Describes the model in numerical detail. Informed Banford of the results; he plans to visit later this week. RNA work is going along well and Rich will write about it in another letter. Dear Peter:
I enclose a page of material that I have sent to Fankuchen, to be added to our manuscript. Let me know if you have any questions about it.
I am interested to hear about Kendrew's success in adding the mercuric tetraiodide ion to sperm whale myoglobin. I agree that the thorough study of these crystals might well be a satisfactory thesis problem for you. It has the advantage over the alpha helix problem that Kendrew and Perutz are experienced in the job, and that by working hard you can be sure of getting something reasonably definite in the way of results during the year.
Crellin continues to do very well in his work as draftsman. He has worked steadily, and his drawings have improved in style. During the last two weeks he has had to put in several hours holding Gus with the fence. The fence is completed now, except that it has net yet been trimmed off at the top - Gus will do that this week. Mama and I think that it looks fine, considerably better than the section that had been put up earlier. I am going to have Gus make some improvements in this section.
I have not got so much work done during the last month as I had expected. I have thought about changes to be made in Chapter 2 of The Nature of the Chemical Bond, and have made a number of decisions, but have not yet rewritten the chapter. I got out a manuscript that I wrote in June, on "Why Is Hydrofluoric Acid a Weak Acid?" and have polished it up for publication. I am going to send it to the Journal of Chemical Education, and will include it almost verbatim in the new edition of The Nature of the Chemical Bond.
Martin Karplus has been here for a week, and we have talked about what he needs to do toward revising our Introduction to Quantum Mechanics. Bright Wilson and I are hoping that he will do most of the work. We do not want it to be changed greatly in character.
Ken Hedberg has finally accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor of Chemistry in Oregon State College, Corvallis. I think that he and Lisa will have to leave in two or three weeks.
- Letter from LP to Professor I. Fankuchen, Editor, Acta Crystallographica, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Encloses a one-page addendum to be added to the manuscript "On the Valence and Atomic Size of Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, and Bismuth in Alloys" which was recently submitted for publication. Also encloses a page with five references to Bridgeman. [Letter from LP to Fankuchen July 27, 1955] [Filed under LP Manuscripts of Articles: 1955a.4]
- Letter from Professor Raymond M. Fuoss, Chemistry Dept., Yale University, to LP RE: Regrets to say that since his letter of August 5, Fuoss has found that his schedule is going to be so heavy that he cannot prepare the review lecture which LP requested. Hopes that this allows sufficient time to find a substitute before the symposium. Klotz would do an excellent job speaking on ionic interactions in polyelectrolytes. [Letter from Fuoss to LP August 5, 1955, Telegram from Fuoss to LP September 6, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.24]
- Letter from T. C. Bronaugh to Caltech RE: Bronaugh has chronic leukemia and thought he had heard that Caltech was conducting leukemia research. Requests advice on treatments other than radiation, such as a drug called Myleran. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]

30 August 1955
Dr. B. L. Kabacoff
5351 West Oxford Street
Philadelphia 31, Pa.
Dear Dr. Kabacoff:
In answer to your suggestion that I prepare an article explaining the resonance controversy for the readers of the AAScW Newsletter, I have to say that I do not think that I could necessarily do a good job. I have tried to understand the arguments presented by the Russian writers, but without success. It seems to me that the whole argument - that is, the Russian criticism of the theory of resonance, rests upon a misunderstanding, or perhaps a series of misunderstandings, and that there really is no basis whatever for the criticism of the theory.
Dr. Murray Vernon King of the Protein Research Project, Brooklyn Polytechnic, has been trying to arrange to have a series of articles written, one by a Russian chemist, presenting the arguments against the theory of resonance, one by me, and a summarizing one by Professor Coulson. So far, however, he has not succeeded in getting the article from the Russian chemist - this was to he prepared first, in order that I might have it in writing a rebuttal.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
- Letter from LP to Dr. Frank D. White, Biochemistry Dept., University of Manitoba, RE: Accepts invitation to deliver the Annual Merck Lecture. Suggests that it be held in the last week of March. [Letters from White to LP August 23, 1955, September 12, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.9]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Fred J. Allen, Chemistry Dept., Purdue University, RE: Allen was correct: LP wants only the answers. Suggests that Allen indicate when an answer has been taken from the first edition's answer sheet. Allen should not worry if he cannot finish providing answers for the first ten chapters before he leaves on his travels. LP will finish the job. Looking forward to seeing Allen in January. - Letter from LP to Dr. Harden M. McConnell, Shell Development Co., RE: Cannot think of any way to proceed in the matter of the two professors of chemistry, MR and RZ, which McConnell mentions in his letter. The attitude of Caltech is that if a foreign scientist coming to the U.S. has the appropriate training and experience, Caltech will extend an invitation to him. Judging from McConnell's letter, this step could not be taken with MR and RZ. Handwritten note in the upper-right margin says that McConnell's letter was destroyed because it was marked "private and confidential." [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Individual Correspondence. - Letter from LP to Mrs. George Steres RE: Pleased to learn about Mrs. Steres' son and the possibility that he might attend Caltech. Has included his name of the list of people to receive the Caltech Catalogue. Summarizes the requirements for admission. It is too late for Mrs. Steres' son to apply for the 1955-56 school year. Suggests that he attend junior college for a year or two and then apply to Caltech. [Letter from Steres to LP August 4, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]

Dear Peter:
The gown and bonnet have arrived, but we have had to pay duty on them because the Pasadena post office has lost your customs declaration form. The customs officer with whom I talked in Los Angeles said that it was fatal to send the form into the post office before the package arrives - that we should have kept it, to show when the package got here.
I enclose a form that you must fill out, in order that we may get reimbursement of the duty that has been paid. Will you do this at once, and return it to me?
I haven't yet seen the outfit (I haven't gone back to the post office to pay the duty and get it}, and I am looking forward very much to opening the package.
I finally got around to answering Victor's letter. Give our love to him and Tess when you see them.
Theorell sent me his manuscript (also photographs of the model) some months ago. He had made the model with some Dural units that I had given him.
I think that a thorough-going job on the orthorhombic sperm whale myoglobin, using the mercuric iodide complex, would be fine for your thesis research. It is straightforward, and offers the possibility of something really significant.
Love from
Linus Pauling:w
- Letter from LP to Professor Felix Haurowitz, Chemistry Dept., Indiana University, RE: Pleased to hear that Haurowitz will be able to speak on molecular complementariness in antigen-antibody systems at the Molecular Structure and Biological Specificity Symposium. - Letter from Paul Weiss, Chairman, Biology Council, Division of Biology and Agriculture, National Academy of Sciences, to Esther Everett Lape, The American Foundation Studies, RE: Thanks Lape for the proofs of the upcoming publication. Greatly impressed by the skill and wisdom with which the volumes have been compiled and written. The Institute of Animal Resources is mentioned, and Weiss finds it amusing that the American Medical Association has repeatedly refused to support this Institute, even though most its benefits accrue to medical, research, testing, and assaying. Proofs are remarkably free of errors. Requests proofs of the chapter on cancer. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Organizational Correspondence. (Am - Am)), #10.1]
- Letter from Professor R.E. Rundle, Chemistry Dept., Iowa State College, to LP RE: Invites LP to deliver the W.F. - Letter from Clark Foreman, Emergency Civil Liberties Committee, to LP RE: Invites LP to speak at their Bill of Rights Dinner on December 15. Planning to hold the dinner in the Carnival Room of the Capitol Hotel. Requests a speech on the effect of freedom on the development of science. Chairman Strauss of the AEC seems to believe that the U.S. is likely to be surpassed by its rivals abroad in the development of science, yet he draws no connection from this to his treatment of Dr. Oppenheimer. Perhaps LP might do so. [Letter from LP to Foreman September 21, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (F: Correspondence, 1935-1956), #128.20]
- Letter from Dr. Samuel Soloveichik, Chemistry Dept., Yeshiva University, to LP RE: Encloses his manuscript entitled "Oxidation Stages of Organic Aliphatic Compounds" and requests LP's comments. - Letter from LP to Postmaster, Post Office, Pasadena, California, RE: On July 29, Peter Pauling mailed a customs declaration to the Postmaster. It referred to a package sent by mail containing a doctor's gown and bonnet of Cambridge University. The East Pasadena Branch Post Office informed LP that the package could be obtained upon payment of duty. LP was also told that the customs declaration was not on hand. Request that a copy of the customs declaration be sent to the East Pasadena Post Office in order that LP may collect the package for his son, who has now returned to England. - Letter from LP to Professor H.C. Longuet-Higgins, Chemical Laboratory, University of Cambridge, RE: Pleased to have received the reprint of Longuet-Higgins' paper on hexaborides, especially the corrections to the paper. LP cannot find his old calculations about the hexaboride crystals. Hoard has written to LP that he has made a refinement of the structure determination of B4C and has shown without doubt that the structure is essentially correct. Has obtained values for the interatomic distances and reduced probably errors. Believes that the essentially empirical interpretation of the interatomic distances is trustworthy. Cites a particular sentence in the paper that he does not understand. Skeptical about calculations showing that there is a strong overlap between the valency orbitals of non-adjacent boron atoms.
