- Letter from LP to Dr. Noyes D. Smith, Jr., Chairman, API Clay Clay Project Review Committee, Shell Development Company, RE: Interested to read Smith's suggestion that he carry out work directed toward understanding the mechanisms of transformations occurring during the development of clay-type layer lattice silicates for the API. For a few years around 1930, Caltech studied the silicate minerals and determined the structure of kaolinite, mica, chlorite, and some others. However, Caltech has not continued work in this field. Believes that it would not be wise for Caltech to compete with able investigators who have been devoting themselves to this work. Thus, LP will not be preparing a proposal. [Letter from Smith, Jr. to LP August 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
