Pitzer, Dean, College of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, to LP RE: Pleased that LP is willing to spend two weeks in January and one week in February at Berkeley. Explains some scheduling difficulties regarding final examinations, recess, and registration. Suggests that LP come January 4, stay through the middle of the following week, then return again on February 13 for two weeks or little shorter period. As Pitzer is officially on sabbatical leave, Professor Cason, as Acting Dean and Chairman, will write LP about financial arrangements. Pitzer will leave Berkeley on March 1 and spend the spring and summer in Europe. Pitzer's son, Russell, expects to be a freshman at Caltech next year. Mellor, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, RE: Pleased to hear that Mellor has been appointed to the Chair of Applied Chemistry at the New South Wales University of Technology. Wonders if he is allowed to travel to America in preparation for the job. LP should not have allowed Dr. Corey to put both their names on the program for the Wool Research Conference, for only Dr. Corey will be attending. LP has traveled so much in the past few months that he feels he must stay in Pasadena for a while to catch up with his work. • Letter from LP to Dr. Friedrich Helfferich, Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry, Germany, RE: The word "orbital" is used as an abbreviation for "orbital Eigen function." In German, it would be "Elektronenbahn Eigenfunktion." The suggestions that Helfferich made in his letter seem satisfactory. Pleased that Helfferich has made an effort to improve the textbook in the German translation.   Dear Campbell:

  This letter is to thank you for your letter of 9 December, with your congratulations on the Nobel Prize. My wife and I had a fine time in Stockholm and on our trip around the world. We enjoyed especially visiting in India, Thailand, and Japan - also Israel.

  As to the matter of driving a ship into the teeth of a gale, I want to repeat that I think that the English graduate student was right. I myself believe that I have shown that a ship can be driven into the teeth of a gale by knotting a windmill on it and coupling it to the propeller. By this I mean, as you say in your letter, motion in a direction at l80° to the direction of the wind. Perhaps you would care to give me the proof that it is impossible, in order that I might check, and find out whether or not I have made a mistake.

  Dear Peter:

  I enclose a card acknowledging receipt of our manuscript by Acta Crystallographica.

  Everything is going along well here. Mama and I have just returned from a trip to Berkeley. I gave a lecture, on Abnormal Hemoglobins, before the American Chemical Society, California Section. We drove up along the coast, staying overnight at Cayucos, near Morro Bay, and also in Pacific Grove. We visited Mrs. Goldsworthy, in Carmel Valley. While in Berkeley we also visited Mrs. Latimer, who has not yet recovered from younger Latimer's death. We drove home by a route that was largely new to us - over 200 miles, perhaps 250, in the Diablo Mountains and the Temblor Range. We were almost alone on the road - we passed a car about once every fifty miles. The road leads along near the top of the mountain range, between 101 and 99. We dropped down toward the east to stay overnight in Coalinga. We did not see anything unusual in the way of wild life, but the scenery was fine.

  Crellin is doing very well with his drafting. He stays pretty steadily on the job, and has picked up the techniques. I have not made very much progress in preparing the new edition of The Nature of the Chemical Bond, but have done something - I have pretty well decided what changes to make in Chapter II, and am ready to start rewriting this chapter.

  We came close to having trouble last week.

  I enclose also a communication about the Boat Fund of Balliol College. I have decided to make a gift to the college. Would you write a check for ten pounds for this purpose, and send it along. Add it to the bill that you will send in to me.

Wall, William Albert Noyes Laboratory, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Dept., University of Illinois, to LP RE: Delighted that LP has decided to lecture at Illinois in the spring. Has made a tentative reservation for LP and AHP at the Illinois Union. Provides calendar with recommended dates for lectures and possible alternatives. Calendar takes into consideration the various meetings that members of the fields of physical chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, and physics will be attending. Wonders if LP would like to have the lectures published in monograph form. Reluctant to inform LP that he must sign a non-communist oath prior to his "employment" as a visiting lecturer at Illinois.
