  • Letter from LP to Dr. David Tyler, School of Medicine, University of Puerto Rico, RE: LP and AHP have been unusually busy, catching up on things that were left undone when they set out on their travels. The AAAS and a meeting of the American Crystallographic Association, both at Caltech, have contributed to this workload. LP and AHP enjoyed their stay in Puerto Rico very much and would like to swim in the warm ocean again. Teas sent the shells, which are very decorative. Doubtful that he can visit Johns Hopkins to speak anytime soon. Thanks Tyler for sending the list of Hellerman's papers. • Letter from LP to the Selective Service System RE: Writes regarding the reclassification of Dr. Martin Karplus as 1A. Describes Karplus as one of the most able young men in the United States in the field of quantum mechanics in relation to chemical problems. The need in the nation for physicists and chemists who are well trained in quantum mechanics is such that universities are now providing undergraduate courses in quantum mechanics. In LP's opinion, Karplus could better serve the country by teaching at the University of Illinois than by serving in the military. Two copies of this letter. [Letter from Karplus to LP July 18, 1955, Letter from LP to Karplus July 26, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Individual Correspondence. (Kamb - Kendrew)), #197.6]
