Hopes to see Haldane again, but does not have any definite plans to visit England at this time. LP has decided to do some work in the field of mental deficiency. He feels sure that many cases of mental deficiency are due to as yet unrecognized biochemical abnormality. Specifically, he plans to study phenylketonuria and mongolism. Requests Haldane's advice in this matter. [Letter from Haldane to LP August 9, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (H: Individual Correspondence. (Haaland - Harned)), #151.5]

SUBJECT Nomination of Harvey Itano
I have prepared a nomination of Harvey Itano for the Theobald Smith Award ($1000 and a bronz [sic] medal) which will be presented to someone during the Association's 122nd meeting, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, this December. Would you he willing to prepare a letter supporting the nomination, in which you stress the nominee's personality, training, and research work? I think that in particular a statement such as you have made to me orally about the high opinion in which Dr. Itano is held personally by members of your Division of Biology would be especially needed. I should like to have seven signed copies of your letter. I enclose a draft of the nomination that I have prepared.
