  Dear Fred:

  I return your check for $200 herewith. If you want to send it back to me again, please do so; but I shall prefer to have you keep it, and to put in some time helping me with the matter of the preparation of an answer sheet to the problems. Did I not write to you a little while ago about this?

  I think that I have received another letter from you recently, but I can't find it now - my desk is covered with letters that have arrived during my absence, and it is probably buried somewhere. My memory of the letter is that you said that your leave from Purdue is such that you cannot receive salary from another university, and also that you are planning to spend the coming year in Corvallis. I can understand this - Ava Helen would, I am sure, be pleased if we were to spend a year in Oregon, I do not like the climate so well, having now got used to the different weather here. Also, after the chancellor of Oregon State College stated that the College could get along without me in the future, I have decided that I shall not go back to Corvallis. Gilbert asked me to come for the dedication of their new laboratory, but I am not going to do so. I shall come only if the College itself invites me.

  I shall ask Mr. Freeman to send you a set of answer sheets to the first edition of College Chemistry and the second edition of General Chemistry. Many of the problems in the new edition are the same as in one of these two earlier books.

  If you would take some of the chapters, check back to see whether answers are given in these answer sheets, and perhaps work the problems for which answers are not given, then communicate all of the results to me, I should be grateful. I shall have to work the rest of the problems, and I am expecting to be pretty busy this summer. I think that this job will probably have to be done early enough to permit Mr. Freeman to send answer sheets to teachers who are going to use the book before the opening of school in the fall.

  I am looking forward to my visit to Lafayette.
