- Letter from Herbert S. Bailey, Jr., Princeton University Press, to LP RE: Would like to know about LP's plans for preparing the Vanuxem Lectures for publication. Sent a contract to LP's office and LP's secretary replied that she would hold it until LP's return to Pasadena. Requests that LP sign both copies and return one to Bailey. Many faculty members have asked when the lectures will be published. [Letter from LP to Bailey, Jr. June 3, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1954s.19]

- Letter from LP to Dr. Edwin S. Gould, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Pleased to find a copy of Gould's book Inorganic Reactions and Structure upon his return to Pasadena. Especially pleased that Gould has dedicated the book to LP. The book looks fine, but the figures in it are not as clear as they could be; comments specifically on the figure of the rutile structure, as well as the layer structures. Surprised to see Gould's mother at a meeting in Hollywood. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (G: Correspondence, 1936-1956)), #140.19]

Dear Mr. Reynolds:
My schedule for the year has been badly upset by unexpected events, especially the trip around the world from which I have recently returned, and I am forced to tell you that I shall not be able to have my manuscript for the third edition of THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND ready by 31 December 1955.
May I ask what arrangement would be most satisfactory to you, in view of this circumstance? I think that it would be a mistake for the book to be out of print, even for a short while. I feel that I could arrange my plans for the future in such a way as to have the manuscript in your hands on 1 July 1956, or 1 October 1956, or 31 December 1956, or at some later time, if you prefer. Also, I would be able to read proof with speed and despatch, so that there would not be any delay in publication.
I shall look forward to your reply.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

However, sends his acceptance of having his name on the friendship scroll to be presented to LP at the dinner honoring him on June 4. [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.13]
