  • Letter from Dr. Sydney Brenner, Physiology Dept., Medical School, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, to LP RE: Discusses arrangements for LP's possible visit to Witwatersrand. Arrangements would also be made for LP to visit the National Physical and Chemical Laboratories, other universities, and several chemical industries. Brenner's work on the incorporation of analogs into proteins is underway. Planning to conduct immuno-chemical research using amino acids as haptens. The purpose would be to use antibodies as model systems to determine how a distinction is made between valine and isoleucine. A handwritten note from Brenner at the end says that an industrial chemical company has offered to arrange a trip for LP to the Kruger National Park Game Reserve as a relaxation from work. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Individual Correspondence. (Brando - Bronk)), #31.6]
  • Letter from Professor W. A. Wooster, Dept. of Mineralogy and Petrology, University of Cambridge, to LP RE: S. C. Prasad, a lecturer from the Physics Dept., Bihar University, India, has been working with Wooster for the past three years. Prasad has been studying the elastic properties of metals using diffuse x-ray reflections. He will submit a thesis for the Ph.D. degree before July 1955. Prasad would like to work in the U.S. before returning to India; Wooster wonders if Caltech has a place for him. Prasad has a wife and a baby; he must find a grant soon.
