- Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, to Dr. Wilfred M. Nobel, Chairman, Committee on Awards, The American Institute of Chemists, RE: On behalf of Caltech's Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, LP would like to thank Nobel for inviting the Division to nominate an excellent senior student in chemistry to receive the Student Medal Award. - Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, to Henry Fisk Carlton, W.H. Freeman and Company, RE: Gives addresses where LP can be reached during April so that page proofs of College Chemistry reach him promptly. LP and AHP will leave for Puerto Rico on May 1. Hopes that Carlton will be able to send all the proofs by then so that AHP can complete the index by April 30. - Letter from Dr. F. Roder to LP RE: In the New York Times on April 8, read a statement by the National Academy of Science on the proposed study of the effects of radiation. Also read statements made previously by scientists with regard to this problem. Struck by the fact that LP was the only scientist to put the emphasis on the important role which resistance to cancer plays in the effects of radiation. Sends reprint of a paper he wrote on the mechanism by which a normal cell is transformed into a cancer cell. - Letter from LP [Signed by Beatrice Wulf] to I. Rigs RE: Thanks Rigs for sending clippings from the Arizona Daily Star. Believes some statements issued by or attributed to the Atomic Energy Commission are misleading to the public. Mentions the AEC statement which asserts that the amount of radiation received through dissemination of artificial radioactive substances is equal to the amount of radiation received in a chest x-ray. Asserts that only a relatively few people have chest x-rays and these people do so voluntarily. Encloses a release LP prepared on this topic, as well as a paper by Professor Sturtevant. Mr. Fred Okrand
257 South Spring Street
Los Angeles 12, California
Dear Mr. Okrand:
Your letter of 27 January arrived while I was on a trip around the world, from which I have now returned. I may say that some of the mail that was forwarded to me did not reach me, and for this reason much of it was just held in my office.
I am glad to give you permission to permit a representative of The Fund for the Republic to examine the files in your office about my case. I enclose the copy of your letter, with the statement to this effect on it.
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling
