2 Nov.1954
Dear Mamma and Daddy,
I am trying to finish this salt water charge in Ferback so John can write a paper. It works
very well for determining the positions of the molecules, but I fear shape considerations
involving the transform will be difficult.
It seems to me the reproductions of the shaded drawings by Roger in Scientific American
191 no. 152ff.. (1954) are not as successful as they might be. Those colored drawings he made a
long time ago were very nice, but those without color are not as clear.
I tried Telluric Acid and myoglobin at pH 8.5 and the reaction does not seem to go.
However, I have not done a really controlled experiment but shall soon.
A fellow named Owen from Autisch is here. He came around to see me. A little strange.
He says some newspapers in Yellow Springs has now gone out of business.
Victor Rothschild is not a fellow of Trinity. He is a senior member resident in
Cambridge as is any M.A. still on the books, who was there earlier. He probably has dining
rights, though.
Lady Heilbron died and her funeral was last week in London.
Sir John Lennard Jones died yesterday which is quite sad. [Louguet] Higgens is around.
Quite gay. I shall go talk to some people about Kittal. Pippard is probably our best bet. He was
an undergraduate about that time.
The retiring age is now 6?
I doubt if I shall be able to do much with liquid crystal, as I have a great deal to do as it
is. I agree it would be very interesting to work on them a little.
Rosalind Franklin is around today. She certainly takes some beautiful photographs.
Thank you for your letter and the cheque. I bought some nice black shoes today.
Much love,
Peter
