7 October 1953
Dr. Dorothy Hodgkin
University Museum
Oxford, England
Dear Dorothy:
Ava Helen and I are happy indeed to have the two volumes on the history of the Anglo-Saxons by Thomas's father, and we thank you both very much.
I think that our conference was successful. Everything went along well, and the only source of unhappiness was your absence. We were cheered up a bit by seeing some fine movies of you, which Dr. Hughes had made, and which he projected at the dinner of the conference, which was held Wednesday evening.
Peter said that you and he were holding your own protein conference, and I hope that it has now taken place. I hope too that Peter is at last really interested in his work. I have heard a rumor to the effect that he has been working very hard. Also, I have written him to say that I feel that some really significant results may be obtained through the investigation of myoglobin, and that I advise him to continue with myoglobin as the subject of his research.
Bragg gave an interesting talk yesterday afternoon, before our chemistry seminar. He spoke on early days of x-ray diffraction, and told about the events in 1912, 1913, and 1914.
I have been invited to come to Israel, at the end of this month, to take part in the dedication of the Weizmann Institute, and I have decided to go, although I am not sure that the decision was a wise one. It will take two weeks for the trip. I shall not, however, stop in England.
We all send you and Thomas our love, and we are looking forward to seeing you in a year or two.
Sincerely
Linus Pauling:W

14 October 1953
Prof. G. V. Raynor
Department of Metallurgy
University of Birmingham
Edgbaston, Birmingham 15
England
Dear Professor Raynor:
I am writing to ask if you could give me your opinion of Dr. Naor, who applied to us for a grant of a post-doctoral fellowship, and gave you as a reference. He has now returned to Israel, but he said to me that he would like to be considered for appointment at some time in the future, and I should accordingly be glad to have your opinion of him.
I have read with interest your paper "The Crystal Chemistry of the Laves Phases," in the February 1953 Acta Crystallographica. Three or four years ago I carried through a detailed discussion of these intermetallic compounds, which has, however, remained unpublished. I reached the conclusion that in almost all of them there is some electron transfer, insuch a direction as to increase the valence of each of the atoms present: in MgZn2, for example, from zinc to magnesium. This assumption, of course, accounts nicely for the unusually short interatomic distances, in comparison with those of the elements. It seems to me that there exists a great deal of evidence showing that electron transfer takes place in this direction, and also that the evidence in rapport of high valences for the transition metals is pretty strong.
Under separate cover I am sending you a reprint of my recent paper on the theory of ferromagnetism. This theory, which is much simpler than other theories of ferromagnetism that have been proposed, permits the calculation of magnetic properties of iron and other ferromagnetic substances without any assumptions - the interaction energies required can be obtained from spectroscopic data. The agreement with experiment is good; but it is obtained with use of the valency 6 for iron and corresponding valencies for the other transition elements. I think that the theory of ferromagnetism thus provides additional support for these valencies.
I should like also to say, with respect to the title of your recent paper, that we refer to these alloys as the Friauf phases.
Prof. Raynor

You know that Dr. Friauf determined the structure of MgZn2 and the structure of MgCu2 several years before Laves became interested in these substances. Friauf obtained his doctor's degree in our laboratory nearly thirty years ago; he was trained in x-ray crystallography by Professor Roscoe G. Dickinson, from whom I also received my training. I have not discussed this question of nomenclature (Friauf phases versus Laves phases) with Friauf, but last year, while I was answering a letter that Laves had written to me about another matter, I mentioned it to him, and he replied that he too thought that it was proper to use the expression Friauf phases. I may say that I have not, so far as I remember, referred to the Friauf phases in any publication, because I think that it is probably better not to adopt the system that the Germans use of naming systems and substances after investigators. The Germans seem to think that the phases should be named not after the first investigator, but rather after the first German investigator. For example, they refer to the "Zintl phases," although I first determined the structure of a "Zintl phase" in 1923, several years before Zintl did any work on them.
I shall be grateful to you for your comments on Dr. Naor.

Dearest Mamma,
Many thanks for your letters, which I am always pleased to receive.
I am very glad Jack is in medical school. I like UCLA. He wrote me a very nice letter,
rather pathetic in ways, he does seem quite lonely. I shall write him again.
I told you about the woman who almost married Glen. I don't live with her.
The fall has been very nice. A good deal of sun and not too cold. A few days (the past
week) has been very cold and wet, but today is very nice. I wear my fur boots a good deal
though.
Bragg is back. I have seen him but not talked to him.
I am glad Crellin likes the Porsche. I like it too. He must be having a good time. Term
is on now. I have to eat supper. It takes too much time. Too much society here.
XXXOOO I love you.
Peter

19 October 1953
Dear Peter:
I have been hoping to hear from you, and to learn how you are getting along. We had a letter from Sidney, in which he said that he lives next door to you now, but that he never sees you, because you are in the laboratory all of the time.
Mama and I have been taking our shots - typhoid, paratyphoid, and cholera. We have the third sets of shots to take next Friday. The reactions have not been serious, although for a few days I felt that they were very serious - since last Saturday I have suffered from a terribly sensitive rash that had broken out on my left shoulder, arm, and neck - that is, the left side of the neck and head. When I began suffering also from intermittent pain around the heart I called Dr. Lippman, who rushed over to check up on me. He found out at once that there was nothing wrong with my heart, and also that I was not suffering a reaction from the injections, but had rather come down with an attack of herpes soster, which has the common name shingles. This is a virus infection of the nerve endings, and it usually attacks only certain main nerves in the body. If these are the nerves that innervate the region in the neighborhood of the belt, then the region around the waist is especially inflamed and sensitive - this is the reason for the name of shingles, from the Latin word cingulum, for belt. I am being attacked in nerves higher up in the body, and only on the left side. Nothing can be done about it.
I am looking forward to seeing you. I am, you know, going to Israel in a week, and I am planning to return by way of England, and spend one day there. I am to arrive at the airport in London at 12:55 P.M., El Al Israel No. 217, on Friday 6 November. I shall take the book in to the terminal, and if you are there I shall proceed with you to any destination you select. If you are not there I shall take the train to Cambridge, and hunt you up. I must then leave the next day, in time to catch BOAC No. 509 leaving London at 8:00 P.M.
I enclose the check for 1 November.
Crellin and I went over to the dock last week, and got the Porsche, which I have been driving around.

Oct 22d 1953
Dear Pauling,
I am playing with complex organic molecules (what I never did before!), am getting some amusing results, and would like to hear your opinion about it.
Ever since I read the article of Watson and Crick last June, I was trying to figure out how a long number written in a fourdigital system (i.e. nucleic acid molecule) can determine (uniquely) a correspondingly long word based on 20-letter-alphabet (i.e. an enzyme molecule). Along the lines of key & lock ideas, one could think about different amino acids as fitting into quadrangular loops formed by four bases in the DNA chain. But there are only five different types of such loops ie such as [diagram of types], etc. *
For a while I have thought that things can be helped by permitting 1-4 (excited) and 3-2 (excited) bonds since, indeed, this would lead to twenty different types of loops. But it would lead to a complete break up of the original W&C model of replication process and is apparently inacceptable.
1-Adenine, 2-Thymine
3-Guanine, 4-Cytosine.
It just [occurred] to me today that another way of get[t]ing 20 different loops would be the use of triangular combinations with three arbitrary bases at vertices: [drawing of triangular combinations] etc. 4x5x6/1x2x3 = 20.
And, indeed, the W&C model permits such shapes because of helical nature of DNA. On the surface of a cylinder the bases will form a system of rombs with three independent and one dependent and one dependent vertices. A, B, and C can be any of the four bases, while D is determined completely by B (D=2 if B=1, ect) [drawing of cylinder]
Thus, there are 20 different types of such rombs, and I wonder [whether] the 20 amino acids "vital for life" are just those which would fit into these 20 different "locks". *) What do you think about it? It would be wonderful if it could be true!
Yours
Geo Gamow
*) The shape of these loops should also explain the fact that only L-amino acids could be used for building of proteins by DNA.

Dr. Mansoor ul Hassan
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine
Baltimore 5, Maryland
Dear Dr. Hassan:
I am glad to have your letter, and the suggestion that an experiment be carried out to demonstrate coiling of polypeptide chains to form antibodies in vitro.
We carried out experiments of this sort over ten years
ago. Results are described in a note in Science. 95, 440
(1942), and a paper in the Journal of Experimental Medicine,76, 211 (1942). We carried out some more experiments, hoping
to manufacture antibodies that would have protective power, but
the results were not very good, and we have not published any-
thing more on this. One of the men in the laboratory, Dr. Frank
Dickey, has published a paper on the manufacture of specific
silica gels to order.
I am sending you separately a reprint of our antibody paper of 1940 and a couple of reprints about the manufacture of specific gels. I am sorry that I do not have copies of the papers on the production of artificial antibodies.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

8 PM 24 October 1953
Dearest little love:
All went well on my trip- one hour late here this morning. I have been handled as a VIP- a TWA man paged me + put me on board in New York ahead of the others, another met me in Paris, had our sit down, + handled my baggage and passport, another put me on the plane again, + a delegation met me + went through customs here in two minutes. I am in the house of Dr Schmidt, who did his work with Dorothy. I bathed, rested an hour, + visited the labs. today. Ceremonies begin tomorrow. On Saturday + Sunday Samuels (a Balhol boy who came to the party on Norham Rd) is taking me by car to Galilee, etc. (Dan, Bethlehem, etc).
There are olive trees, oranges, eucalyptus, castor, + sand here- much like home.
I saw Magat in Paris. Bauer was out of town. Mlle Cauchois got his job- I talked to her. Magat said the ACS had refused membership to Mlle. Johot-Curie. I went to the Inst.d.Radium + saw her + the letter, and have written Daniels about it, saying that he should act fast to rectify his mistake. The French chemists are pretty angry.
Magat took me to lunch in the little restaurant behind the Pantheon.
I walked down Boul. Mich', and over to the Faredes Invalides, + and caught the limousine. The plane stopped at Geneva, Rome, and Athens, but I was tired, and didn't get out.
Herman Mark is due later tonight. He is staying in this house too. Bohr, Chain, + Peyton Rous are the other foreign guests.
Much love from your
Paddy

28 October 1953
Dr. Farrington Daniels, President
American Chemical Society
University of Wisconsin
Madison 6, Wisconsin
Dear Farrington:
On my way to the dedication of the Weizmann Institute here, I stopped in Paris for six hours yesterday, and went to the Physical Chemistry Laboratory in the Sorbonne. There I was told that Mme. Joliot-Curie, having applied for A.C.S. membership (re-in-statement, I think) had been refused membership. I immediately went to the Institut du Radium and found that it was true - she showed me the letter, dated 24, July, and signed by Norman Bekkedahl. I apologized, for the American Chemical Society, and said that I would get in touch with you. I trust that you will rectify this without delay.
Mme. Joliot-Curie is of course a fine person, and a great scientist - a Nobel Laureate, with father, mother, and husband all Nobel Laureates.
I hope that you can take action before our country is further damaged - the news seems to be spreading among French chemists, and creating ill will.
Sincerely,
(Signed) Linus Pauling

Fr. 9 AM 30 Oct. 1953
Dearest love: The days are passing slowly. Yesterday I visited the laboratories some more. There is some interesting work going on. Gerhard Schmidt, who had worked with Dorothy, has some nice crystal structure determinations. He wants one of our new PhD's for a year- the Rockefeller Foundation will send him.
I had lunch with Mazur + his wife, whom he married after leaving our lab, 3 years ago. Do you remember him?- a young man with a hearing aid, who spoke English poorly- he worked with Kirkwood.
At 4 PM we went to the first ceremony, the opening of the gate + new road to the Weimann Memorial Region. The President of Israel, Itsaac Ben-Zvi, was there, also Mrs Weimann, the British Ambassador, etc. We five scientific guests sat in a row in front- Berenblum (whose two daughters were with Linda in Oxford High School), Peyton Rous, Chain [?], Mark, + I. We signed a scroll, with the President etc., which was then put in a niche, under covered with mortar (it was put in a metal case), and then topped with the cornerstone. Then we went to Weimann's grave, walking between rows of little boys + girls holding torches (it had just become dark). The President spoke, then an old jew, wearing his hat, who was very emotional (all of course, in Hebrew)- he wept + wailed, with accompanying cries from the people around, and then a cantor, for several minutes- the pentatonic scale, of course- very interesting and impressive. Then we went to a cocktail party in the Director's house (My Weisgal), and then Schmidt, Hilda Brand (Weisgal's secretary) and I drove to Tel-Aviv and had an Arab meal and looked about the town. Mark + I are staying in Miss Brand's house- I had misunderstood, + thought she was Mrs Schmidt. I had invited
[page 2, side of envelope:]
her and Schmidt to dinner, but did not succeed in being host. The dinner was coumous (bean past + olive oil), beer, a kind of muffin, shashlik + kabib, potatoes, pastry, thick coffee. Tel-Aviv contains much rubble from the '48 war.
Today we have another cermony, at 11 AM. Then after lunch I start of with Samuel + Joffe. Samuel is the tall Balhol boy who came to our house. He is the grandson of Viscount Samuel. We shall drive up to Haifa, + then
[opposite side of envelope:]
(tomorrow) over to the Sea of Galilee, Tiberias, Nazareth, the Jordan River, etc. We are about 25 mi. West of Jerusalem, but I don't know yet when I shall go there. Cars are very scarce here.
Yesterday morning I gave an informal seminar on ferromagnetism [?]- well received.
My neck and shoulders seem a bit better. I hope that your back is well- if not, please go to the doctor.
Love from Paddy
Love to Crelly.
