19 October 1953
Dear Peter:
I have been hoping to hear from you, and to learn how you are getting along. We had a letter from Sidney, in which he said that he lives next door to you now, but that he never sees you, because you are in the laboratory all of the time.
Mama and I have been taking our shots - typhoid, paratyphoid, and cholera. We have the third sets of shots to take next Friday. The reactions have not been serious, although for a few days I felt that they were very serious - since last Saturday I have suffered from a terribly sensitive rash that had broken out on my left shoulder, arm, and neck - that is, the left side of the neck and head. When I began suffering also from intermittent pain around the heart I called Dr. Lippman, who rushed over to check up on me. He found out at once that there was nothing wrong with my heart, and also that I was not suffering a reaction from the injections, but had rather come down with an attack of herpes soster, which has the common name shingles. This is a virus infection of the nerve endings, and it usually attacks only certain main nerves in the body. If these are the nerves that innervate the region in the neighborhood of the belt, then the region around the waist is especially inflamed and sensitive - this is the reason for the name of shingles, from the Latin word cingulum, for belt. I am being attacked in nerves higher up in the body, and only on the left side. Nothing can be done about it.
I am looking forward to seeing you. I am, you know, going to Israel in a week, and I am planning to return by way of England, and spend one day there. I am to arrive at the airport in London at 12:55 P.M., El Al Israel No. 217, on Friday 6 November. I shall take the book in to the terminal, and if you are there I shall proceed with you to any destination you select. If you are not there I shall take the train to Cambridge, and hunt you up. I must then leave the next day, in time to catch BOAC No. 509 leaving London at 8:00 P.M.
I enclose the check for 1 November.
Crellin and I went over to the dock last week, and got the Porsche, which I have been driving around.
