Sir Thomas Taylor
University College of the West Indies
Mona, St. Andrew
Jamaica, B.W.I.
Dear Taylor:
I was pleased to learn in England, and also from your letter, which was awaiting us when we returned, about
your new job at University College at Exeter. I think that this should be fine, although Ava Helen and I are very disappointed to think that we shall now lose out on the opportunity of coming to Jamaica.
Corey and I have just sent off another paper on
the proteins, to be published in NATURE in a month or so. We
have verified that the α helix (our 3.7-residue helix) is pre-
sent in hair and horn related proteins, but have found
that their structures are somewhat more complicated, in that
there are cables, 30 A. in diameter, present in these fibers,
these cables being formed by twisting six α helixes around a
central one.
We are hoping to come to England again next summer, on our way to the International Congress in Stockholm, and perhaps we shall meet again at that time.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
- Letter from Leslie E. Sutton of Magdalen College, Oxford to LP RE: writes that their project for compiling a list of inter-atomic distances from x-ray crystallographic examination has made progress. Mentions Jerry Donohue and Dorothy Hodgkin in making an analysis on a number of organic compounds. Asks LP if the idea of limiting the list to only molecular crystals is a good one. Also enquires as to whether LP might consider a former pupil, Dr. L.E. Orgel, for work at Caltech. [Letter from LP to Dr. Leslie Sutton March 24, 1952, letter from LP to Dr. Sutton October 30, 1952] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #370, Folder #8. : File (Sutton, Leslie E.)].
- Memo from R. P. Sharp to LP RE: Discusses changing the credits for a course in Physical Chemistry. Ask if the Division supports this change, and if so, what a reasonable number of credits would be. [Filed under: LP Biographical, Box 1.020, Folder 20.5]

- Note from Patricia Klamerth to LP RE: reminds LP of her husband's interest in a possible position at Caltech. She wonders if she might be able to speak with LP about it while she is staying in Pasadena. [Note in black in upper right: "I told her no job open. She asked if possibility in say 1954. I said no a staff position but possibly temporary Res. Fellowship," note in pencil on top: "Oct 30 coming 2 PM," at bottom of letter in pencil: "3599 Blanche St. Pasadena 10"] [related letter from Olaf Klamerth to LP March 26, 1952] [Filed under K: Correspondence 1952, Box #200, Folder #17]
