- Letter from J. Miller to President of Caltech RE: writes that during November 1953 through December 1954 he will be permitted by his University to proceed on sabbatical to spend time in the U.S.A. He requests information from Caltech about scholarships and teaching fellowships. His interests are in Organic and Physical Organic Chemistry. Dear Arne:
I am writing to tell you that the remainder of the trip that Ava Helen and I made to Europe turned out very well, and to thank you again for your assistance in getting my passport.
We spent one month in England. I visited most of the laboratories in which x-ray work on protein structure is being done, and talked with most of the people who are doing such work. In this way I made up, I think, for the failure to attend the Royal Society meeting in May - at any rate, so far as I myself am concerned, in that the doubts that some of these people had about the correctness of our protein structures were strongly expressed to me during my visits with them.
As a result, I concentrated on the problem of explaining the difficulties, and fortunately was able to find what seems to be a satisfactory solution. Professor Corey and I have written a brief statement about this work, and it will be published soon in NATURE. I think that the new structures - which represent only slight changes, but still significant ones, of our original α-keratin structure - are very interesting, and I am hoping that we shall find some biological materials have still more complex aggregates of the α helix, such as a cable composed of nineteen α helices twisted about one another.
I am looking forward to seeing you in Stockholm next summer; perhaps also in Brussels in the spring.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

- Letter from Leonard Lerman to LP RE: writes that he has begun a manuscript for his Hapten paper and asks what journal LP thinks he should prepare it for. Also encloses a summary for his Chicago work and asks LP for comments. The work has something to do with enzymes. Also urges LP to do a seminar at U. of Colorado. [Note in pen at left: "JACS or J Imm" also at top a mathematical equation is written out] [Manuscript included with the title "A Biochemically Specific Method for Enzyme Isolation"] [Letter of response from LP to Dr. Lerman October 23, 1952] [Filed under L: Correspondence 1952, Box #230, Folder #18]
