2 July 1952
Sir Thomas Taylor, Principal
University College of the West Indies
Mona, St. Andrew
Jamaica, B.W.I.
Dear Taylor:
I am happy to see in the last issue of NATURE that you have been knighted, and I write to extend my congratulations to you.
Ava Helen and I are still hoping to come down to Jamaica to visit you. I do not know when it will be possible for us to do so. I am now working hard on a revision of my textbook GENERAL CHEMISTRY - we plan to get out a second edition next spring. In revising the book I am making it somewhat more advanced; my COLLEGE CHEMISTRY is a slightly more elementary discussion of the same material.
We have been having a lot of fun in our work on the structure of proteins. There now seems to be pretty general agreement that some of our structures are correct, although a few people, namely the workers at Courtaulds, are still complaining.
Our eldest son, Linus Jr., got his M.D. degree last month. He and his wife are now in Honolulu. He is to intern at the Queen's Hospital. We have their three little boys with us - the eldest has just passed his third birthday. They and our three younger children are going to fly over to Honolulu later this month.
Our second son Peter, got his bachelor's degree in physics at this Institute, and is going to go to Cambridge in September. He has been accepted at Peterhouse, and is going to work with Kendrew in the Cavendish.
We send our best regards to Lady Taylor,
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

11 July 1952
Dr. Melba Phillips, 298
West 11th Street
New York 14, N. Y.
Dear Dr. Phillips:
I enclose a copy of a letter that I have sent to Dr. Crowther, containing my resignation as Vice-President of the World Federation.
I would not resign if I felt more in accord with the present policies and activities of the World Federation. Moreover, if the policies and activities of the World Federation were being determined under conditions such that I could be taking an effective part in their determination, together with other people from the American Association of Scientific Workers, the Association of Scientific Workers of the United Kingdom, the Association of Scientific Workers of South Africa, and so on, I might well not feel that I should resign. I hate to give up the hope for an effective international organization of scientists, devoted to scientific problems, that was expressed by the Association of Scientific Workers of the United Kingdom when this organization took the action, six years ago, that led to the formation of the World Federation.
May I suggest that the officers of the American Association of Scientific Workers consider the question of whether the American Association should disaffiliate from the World Federation.
Do you know if the Association of Scientific Workers of the
United Kingdom is again taking up the question? I suggest that you obtain this information, and raise the question with the officers of the American Association. I shall not try to survey the matter in this letter, but I point out that there has been considerable change in policies and composition of the World Federation during the last year.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Bill:
At the last moment we have been notified by the State Department that a passport is being given me, and we are accordingly leaving for Europe day after tomorrow.
I have prepared a revised manuscript for the first 20 chapters of GENERAL CHEMISTRY, except that the gas-law chapter, Chapter 14, has not yet been revised.
I have not had an opportunity to cheek the final typescript of a good bit of Chapters 1 to 20. Also, I have not had an opportunity to check the new figures that Roger Hayward has drawn or is drawing, However, I have asked Mrs. Wulf to mail the manuscript of the twenty chapters and the new drawings to you.
Because of the rush, I have not had tine to cut out the old figures that are being used in the new edition, and paste them in the proper place in the manuscript. I know that this would be a great convenience to the reader, but I think that you (and he) can surmise what figure in COLLEGE CHEMISTRY or the first edition of GENERAL CHEMISTRY (most of them are in COLLEGE CHEMISTRY, except those that are just being drawn) is being referred to at a given place in the text.
We shall return to Pasadena on September 15. I shall not try to get anything done on the manuscript until then, but I shall pick up information about the revision by talking with people in France and England. I trust that you will have your comments, and the comments of your reader, on the first twenty chapters ready when I get back, and I think that I should be able to finish the revision rather quickly. I am especially anxious to have your opinion of the new chapters, 3 and 7.
I hope that this change in my plans does not interfere seriously with your schedule.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. Hans Kuhn

Dear Dr. Kuhn:
I feel that I am responsible for the misunderstanding about the square of the bond strengths. I am pretty sure that I discussed with you the matter of using the squares of the bond strengths, rather than the first powers; but what I had in mind was that the bond energy should be proportional to the sum of the squares of the bond strengths of the two orbitals perhaps with different coefficients, but not to the product of the squares - that is, I had in mind either the sum of the squares, or the product of the first powers. At any rate, some time ago I carried out a rather extensive set of calculations trying to decide which of these two alternatives was the better.
I don't think that any great harm has been done.
I would also say that I still do not know which of these two treatments is the better one.
My wife and I are leaving for Paris, and after two weeks there we shall go to England for a month. I am sorry that we do not have any plans to come to Switzerland.
Cordially yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling

Iodoovalbumin concentrates in mitochondria of liver cells (Hanrowitz) Also (Hanrowitz) C14 labeled azoprotein- after 5 months still 1000 or so molecules per mitochondria! Hence antigens stay in cells for long times. Beef serum glob and S come only (S= sulfonic acid benzine) stays in blood of rabbit about 1 or 2 days and then is taken out into Kupffer cells and mitochondria, when some antibody is made. With many S (20 or 30) the injected stuff is taken into cells at once- few minutes."

- "Riley does not find any sign of the 1.5 reflection in albumin. He pointed out that the segments of alpha helix are probably too short for this reflection to occur. He suggests it would be wise if the symbol [gamma] could be used for proteins of the collagen type."
- "Riley would like to give a lecture to our students when he comes to Pasadena. Let him know definitely about the March conference in October!"
- AHP journal entry in journal entitled "France and England 1952 also Toronto" RE: "D.P. Riley wants to collaborate with Paddy and write a joint paper. He wants us to work out the radial distribution curves for collagen right away. He says that Arndt wrote him that their radial dist. curve for collagen agrees with our calculated curve for the gamma helix as well as the albumen agree with the alpha helix- Beta Carbon in position one dashed line."

"One or two years ago Lwoff (also Bertain) pointed out that some phage are temperate- thus P2 + [Shiga?] [goes to] Shiga (P2), which are lysogenic (some bacteria are lysed, others not, but become infected). A virulent phage lyses all the bacteria. Lwoff says they have been known 28 yrs., but not clearly recognized. Much work now done on genetics of phage."
"Sh is sensitive to T1 T2...T7 but Sh (P2) is sensitive only to T1 T3 and T7. Hence Sh made lysogenic by P2 becomes resistant to certain strains. Sh (P1) is resistant to P2. Mark Adams (NYU) finds 0.1% of phage (T5) is heat resistant. That is, he gives higher temperature for heat inactivation. These are phenotypes- they give progeny like original T5. A mutant (genotype) that is heat-resistant is present 1x10-7, and can be cultured out. Rate of inactivation of 5 strains of T5 all different, but of 5 phenotypes and the heat-res. genotype the same. I suggested that a new rate-determining process has become operative in the 5 phenotypes and the mutant. [drawing to the left] Lwoff says that there is good evidence that the phage reproduces at one time- not by liberative separate genes. All genes seem to be in one string, some close together. Hershey used radio S in phage, let them act for 2 min. on bacteria and washed them off; All S* remained out, although bacteria then lysed. Hence it must have been the nucleoproteins (DNA) inside the phage that went into the bacterium and did the organizing. Radio P, on the other hand, went in. The bact. (phage) lysagenic complexes seem to reproduce only DNA part: then when shocked my UV or mustard (radiomimetic) they produce phage and are lysed.
