- Letter from Charles Apt to LP. [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #12, Folder #18]
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, Massachusetts
[all handwritten] Prof. Linus Pauling
Chemistry Dept
California Institute of Technology,
Pasadena, Calif.
Dear Sir:
Some months ago I wrote to you asking about the possibility of doing post doctorate research with you in the academic year 1952-1953. Sometime after that I met you here at M.I.T. and discussed with you the possibility of working on the structures of the [?] nucleic acids. This problem was suggested to me by Prof Shoemaker.
You suggested a couple of ways in which it might be …[?]…possible for me to study with you at Cal Tech. I started to act on your suggestions, when a teaching position became available at Amherst College and I was offered one position. After a considerable amount of deliberation I accepted this position.
This decision was a very difficult one to make. For I have been looking forward to studying with you for some time and I think that the study of the nucleic acids should prove to be very fascinating. However I felt that this position at Amherst would give me some good experience in teaching and in developing a line of research.
While you were here you suggested that I write to Prof. A. R. Todd [?] to ask for some further information on the structure of the nucleic acids. This I did, and I have received some reprints of articles published by him in the Journal of the Chemical Society of London, one of which is particularly pertinent. You no doubt have seen it, but I shall send it on to you when Prof. Shoemaker has finished with it.
I want to thank you very much for your encouraging interest in this problem. And for the suggestions you made regarding post doctoral fellowships. I hope I may be able to meet you again in the near future.
Very truly yours,
Charles M. Apt

3 March 1952
Mr. Ben May
P.O. Box 1186
Mobile 7, Alabama
Dear Mr. May:
I thank you for your last letter, and the clipping from the Lancet, as well as for other letters and clippings that you have sent to me during recent months.
I may say that our work on sickle cell anemia is continuing to go along well. A number of hematological abnormalities related to hemoglobin have been uncovered. Also, plans are moving along well for the clinical test of a therapeutic treatment that we have formulated on the basis of our knowledge of the abnormality of the hemoglobin. This clinical work is being carried out by Dr. George Burch, Professor of Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine. He has gone through the preliminary period of study, development of assay methods, etc., and reported to me that the one patient on whom the therapy had been tried out got better, although of course one patient is not enough to prove anything.
We are very pleased with a new development here. A resident of southern California gave the California Institute of Technology $750,000 last year, toward the expense of building a new laboratory of chemical biology. In January he died, and in his a will he left an additional $300,000 for the construction of the laboratory. Building costs are very high now, but I believe that the Trustees are planning to go ahead with the construction of the building. Professor Beadle and I are hoping that we can raise some additional money to equip the laboratory space that will be provided. Both Professor Beadle and I, together with the people who are working most closely with us, especially on problems of chemical biology that relate to medicine, will move into the new building. It will, according to our plans, be connected directly to the present chemistry laboratory and to the present biology laboratory.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Victor:
Ava Helen and I thank you for your invitation to us to spend the week with you, beginning May 14. We are glad to accept, at any rate tentatively.
I have to say that it may turn out to be impossible for us to come to England this spring. Accordingly, I trust that you will not count on our coming to visit you to such an extent as to permit it to interfere with other plans. I have, in fact, gone so far as to write to Andrade, saying that I thought it not unlikely that I would not be able to give my Friday evening discourse on May 16, and that it probably would be wise for him to schedule someone else for it. I have not written the Royal Society to this effect - if I am disappointed in my hope to be present at the conference on proteins, nothing can be done by the Royal Society anyway: the conference will be held, and Corey will, I trust, present the material that I have planned to present.
What Ava Helen and I had hoped for was a rather quiet month in England, and a week visiting with you and Tess would be wonderful. In fact, I would like very much to help you carry out an experiment on bull spermatozoa, as you suggest.
Life is very interesting right now. Every day something new in the field of protein structure turns up. At the moment I am working on the structure of silk fibroin - I think that we have succeeded in proving that the crystalline part of silk fibroin does not contain any tyrosine residues, and from this, and other facts, we conclude that the molecules are different in composition along their length, perhaps with tyrosine only at the ends, and that the middle parts of the molecules crystallize, leaving the ends as a frayed-out amorphous bulb.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. E. N. C. Andrade
The Royal Institution
21, Albemarle Street
London, W. 1
England
Dear Andrade:
I trust that you received my cable, as well as my earlier letter.
My situation at present is that I have hope that I shall be in England in May, and I think that the probability is great enough to justify my planning to present the Friday evening discourse on May 16. There is, however, some chance, as stated in my earlier letter, that I shall not be able to present the discourse, and it was for this reason that I wrote to you. A significant increase in the probability of my being there caused me to send the cable. I am afraid that I cannot estimate these probabilities numerically at the present time.
Under these circumstances I shall understand your action if you decide to make another arrangement immediately for the May 16 discourse. Nevertheless, I hope to come to England, and I hope that I may give the discourse at that time.
Cordially yours,
Dictated by Linus Pauling

March 28, 1952
Dr. Detlev W. Bronk, President
National Academy of Science
2101 Constitution Avenue
Washington, D.C.
Dear Det:
May I ask you to take action, as President of the National Academy of Sciences, about the matter of the issuance of a passport to me, in the following way - that is, if it is not too great an inconvenience for you.
I should like to know whether the President is going to answer my letter of February 29, 1952, to him, in order that I may know what to do about the Royal Society of London. I should also like to have your advice, and possibly that of Roger Adams, the Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, as to what I should do. You remember that the principal reason for my trip to England is to attend the discussion conference of the Royal Society on the structure of proteins, to be held in London on May 1. In fact, the date was changed to May 1 in order to permit my attendance. It is my understanding that the protein structures that Professor Corey and I have suggested are to be the principal subject of discussion at the meeting. Because of these circumstances, and because I am a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (as you are also), I feel that it is especially important that I be present at the meeting. It is for this reason that I did not notify the Royal Society when I received the letter from Mrs. Shipley saying that a passport was not being issued to me, but instead wrote to the President, asking that the decision be reconsidered.
I may say that I do not plan to engage in any activities other than purely scientific ones on this trip. I might, of course, raise the question as to whether I should not have the privilege of discussing social and political questions with other people; but the fact is that I do not propose to do so. My plans are as follows. My wife and I propose to fly from New York on April 27 by B.O.A.C. arriving in London on April 28. The Society for Visiting Scientists has arranged to hold a reception for my colleague Professor Robert B. Corey and me, at 5 Old Burlington Street, on Wednesday, April 30. I may point out that the Honorary Presidents of the Society for Visiting Scientists are the President of the Royal Society and the Chairman of the British Council, and that Sir Harold Spencer Jones is the President and Chairman this year - I do not think there could be any objection to my attending this reception. Then I plan to take part in the royal Society Conference on Proteins on May 1. I am scheduled also to give a Friday Evening Discourse at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, on Friday, May 16. I have been invited to give a talk on the structure of proteins at Oxford University, and it is not unlikely that I would give a similar talk at Cambridge University, although I have not been invited to do so. I propose to stay for one week in Cambridge, from May 14, to May 21, with Lord Rothschild. At present my wife and I plan to stay in London until May 14, to spend then a week or two in Oxford, and the remaining time at Leeds, where much work on proteins is being carried out, and perhaps at other British universities. Our only activities, aside from sightseeing, would be to discuss scientific questions with people in these places.
I hope very much that it will not be necessary for me to inform the Royal Society that I cannot be present at the special discussion meeting on the structure of proteins on May 1. It is for this reason that I ask if you could make inquiry at the White House about the fate of my letter. If it turns out that the passport is not going to be issued to me, I ask that you advise me as to the best way to break the news to the Royal Society.
Let me say that I appreciate deeply your efforts in my behalf.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
