Dear Doc:
I have not known your address in recent years. However, I have just seen it in the booklet on the Department of Chemistry of the University of Illinois, which contains a list of all Ph.D.'s from the Department, and I am writing to give you some of the news, and to find out
how you are getting along.
It is nearly twelve years since I saw you last. You remember that I was ill at the tine. It turned out that the illness was a very serious one - Bright's disease - and it took me a good while to get back into shape again, I have been feeling fine now, probably as the result of my sticking closely to the diet and prescribed regime generally.
Our eldest son, Linus Jr., was in the Boston region for three
years, as a student at Harvard Medical School. He got his M.D. last June, and is now interning in the Queen's Hospital in Honolulu. He is married, and has three small boys. Our other children are not married. Peter is a graduate student at Cambridge, England, and Linda is a junior at Reed College. The youngest boy is in high school.
My work keeps me very busy. I have been giving, the freshman lectures since 1937, and a graduate course every year in addition. At present my research deals largely with the structure of proteins and of nucleic acid. Our Department of Chemistry is moderately large, but things go along smoothly here.
I see Paul Emmett about once a year. Within the last few years I have also seen Milton Harris, Oz Helmer, Orlando Romig, and one or two others.
Ava Helen and I spent two months in France and England last summer. We were in Paris for seventeen days, and then we rented a car and drove around England and Scotland for one month. We spent nearly a year in Europe four years ago, when I served as Eastman Professor at Oxford.
I have been invited to participate in the Ninth Solvay Congress in Brussels next April, and I am planning to present a report
Dr. Rowland

on the present status of the problem of determining the structure of proteins.
Please let me know what you are doing now and how you are getting along. Do you ever see any of the boys from Corvallis?
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

In the interpretation of the Lotman-Picken photograph of muscle it would be helpful to be able to estimate with confidence the relative quantities of the materials responsible for the α-keratin portion and the crystalline portion of the observed x-ray scattering.
As a possible practical approach to this problem I have prepared a photograph of a horsehair to which are attached three very fine, needle-like crystals of urea. The urea crystals were so long that they extended beyond the x-ray beam in both directions along the fiber. Since the density of urea (1.335) is close to that of the density expected for horsehair (about 1.3), the relative amounts of urea and horsehair in the beam could be taken as proportional to their respective cross sections. These respective cross sections, as calculated from measurements of the hair and the crystals with a micrometer eyepiece, were found to be in the following ratio:
cross section of crystals = 0.0029 mm.2 = 0.05
cross section of hair 0.06 mm.2
[Data Equation]
Maximum error of measurement, 10%
The attached photograph was made by rotating the combined sample in a beam of copper radiation; sample to film distance, approximately 3.25 cm. A flat-film Unicam camera was used.
It is interesting, although perhaps not significant, to note that Bloor ("Biochemistry of the Fatty Acids", p.200) lists the following data on the composition of dry muscle tissue.

Subject: Proposed investigation of electronic structure of phosphorus pentachloride
I think that the work that you have been carrying out on the electric dipole moments of halogen derivatives of methane is not interesting enough to justify your continuing with it. I suggest instead that you carry out some calculations on the electronic structure of molecules such as phosphorus pentachloride.
Phosphorus pentachloride has the configuration of a trigonal bipyramid. According to an unpublished investigation by Schomaker, the two axial chlorine atoms are 2.11 Å. from the phosphorus atom, and the other three chlorine atoms, in equatorial positions, are 2.04 Å. from the phosphorus atom. Rouault at first gave the values 2.25 and 2.10 Å. for these distances, and then, after the publication of Schomaker's values in the Nature of the Chemical Bond, he reported 2.07 and 2.01 Å.
I think that some theoretical work on PCl5 has been reported, but I do not have the references at hand. I suggest that you look through the literature, especially the Journal of Chemical Physics for the last few years, to see what you can find about orbitals for the trigonal bipyramid.
In the Nature of the Chemical Bond the statement is made that the phosphorus atom can form 5 covalent bonds, in these atoms, by the use of 1 3d orbital. I suggest that an investigation of the electronic structure of PCl5 be made, by methods somewhat similar to those used by Dr. Simonetta in the paper on bond orbitals and bond energy in elementary phosphorus. An outline of the proposed calculations is given in the following paragraphs.
Let us assume first that the 5 bonds are pure covalent bonds, formed with use of one 3d orbital. The problem is then to find the best sp3d orbitals that can be formed. It is necessary that the orbitals be orthogonal to one another, and we define as the best orbitals the orbitals that make the bond energy for the molecule a maximum. We assume that the bond energy for a P-Cl bond is proportional to the product of the strength S of the chlorine bond orbital and the strength of the phosphorus bond orbital. The strength of the chlorine bond orbital is assumed to be constant; hence our problem is to find the set of 5 orthogonal sp3d orbitals for which the sum of the strengths in the respective bond directions (toward the corners of the trigonal bipyramid) is a maximum. I suggest that you solve this problem first, in case that it has not already been solved and reported in the literature. If you find that it has been reported in the literature, please check the calculations.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the two kinds of bond orbitals for the phosphorus atom, as determined by this treatment, differ in their bond strengths, and especially whether they differ in such a way that the three equatorial bond orbitals are better than the two axial ones. Next, we must consider the partial ionic character of the phosphorus-chlorine bonds. Phosphorus has electronegativity 2.1, the same as hydrogen, and accordingly we predict about the same amount of partial ionic character for the phosphorus-chlorine bond as for the hydrogen-chlorine bond. The latter is indicated by the electric dipole moment of hydrogen chloride to be 17% If we assume that there is synchronism in the achievement of partial ionic character by the 5 bonds, each having the ionic aspect P+-Cl- 17% of the time, the five ionic structures of the sort Cl-Cl-P+-Cl-Cl Cl- make a total contribution of 85%, leaving only 15% for the completely covalent structure. It is, of course, possible that the amount of partial ionic character is somewhat greater, and that the completely covalent structure makes a still smaller contribution than 15%. In any case, it is clearly important to investigate the configurations of the phosphorus atom in which 4 covalent bonds and 1 ionic bond are formed.
I suggest that as your second job in the attack on the problem you discuss the nature of the best bond orbitals that can be formed by a phosphorus atom in this situation. There are two structures to be considered. The first is that in which one of the axial bonds is ionic, and the second is that in which one of the equatorial bonds is ionic. The first problem is to be tackled by essentially the same methods as that used by Simonetta in the discussion of the P4 molecule. Equations are to be formulated for three equivalent equatorial bond orbitals, projecting approximately in the directions of the three equatorial chlorine atoms, and a fourth axial bond orbital, extending in the positive direction of the z axis. I think that the discussion on page 6 of the elementary phosphorus manuscript relates to the three bond orbitals, which together have the symmetry given by a three-fold axis, the z axis. You need in addition a fourth orbital of the spd type that is orthogonal to each of these three. You are then to evaluate the strength of each of the three orbitals in the direction of its respective equatorial chlorine atom, and the strength of the fourth orbital in the direction of the positive z axis. It might be interesting for you to maximize the sum of these four bond strengths, without consideration of the energy of promotion of an electron from the s or p orbital to the d orbital. The actual problem, however, is to minimize the energy for the phosphorus atom with consideration both of the bond energy and of the promotional energy. The secular equation given on page 7 of the manuscript is not the correct one for you to use. I suggest that you set up the expression for the total energy of the molecule, including bond energy and promotional energy, on the assumption that there are three equatorial covalent bonds and one axial covalent bond, and then minimize the total energy with respect to all of the parameters.
In setting up the energy for the molecule you may make use of the atomic energy values given on page 5 of the manuscript; namely, you may assume that the energy of promotion of a 3s electron to a 3p orbital is 194 kcal/mole-1 and that the energy of promotion of a 3p electron to a 3d orbital is also 194 kcal mole-1.
In addition you need to make some assumption about the phosphorus-chlorine bond energy. The energy of a normal phosphorus-phosphorus bond is given in the manuscript as 51.6 kcal mole-1 (please check this value with the published paper - perhaps a change has been made). The chlorine bond energy, in Cl2, is 57.8. The average of these two is 54.7 kcal mole-1, which can be taken as the normal covalent bond energy for these two atoms. The strength of a normal phosphorus bond orbital is given on page 7 of the manuscript as 2.118. Hence the energy of a phosphorus-chlorine bond can be taken as 25.9 S kcal mole-1, where S is the strength of the phosphorus bond orbital in the direction of the bond; that is, in the direction of the line from the phosphorus nucleus to the chlorine nucleus.
After you have solved this problem, the next calculation to be made is the same one for the case that two covalent bonds are formed to the two axial chlorine atoms, and two covalent bonds to two of the three equatorial chlorine atoms. This calculation is to be carried out in the same way as the preceding one.
The ionic aspect of the phosphorus pentachloride molecule may now be represented approximately by five ionic functions, with equal weight; these are tow functions of the first kind, in which there is an ionic bond to one of the two axial chlorine atoms, and three functions of the second kind, in which there is an ionic bond to one of the three equatorial chlorine atoms. If the average strength of the covalent bonds to an axial chlorine atom turns out to be less than the average strength of the covalent bonds to an equatorial chlorine atom, as given by this calculation, we may consider that the difference in phosphorus-chlorine distance reported by Professor Schomaker, and also by Rouault, has been given a theoretical explanation. It might even be possible to discuss the magnitude of the difference in interatomic distance in terms of the nature of the bond orbitals.
Finally, a discussion of the significance of the ionic structures and of the completely covalent structure should be carried out. This can be done by setting up a secular equation for the six structures. The energy values to be introduced in the diagonal terms of the secular determinant are those that have been calculated by the methods described above. The non-diagonal matrix elements are to be obtained with use of the formulas published by Schomaker and Simonetta. These formulas permit a reasonable estimate to be made of the resonance integral corresponding to change from a covalent to an ionic structure. The Coulomb integral for the ionic structure should be given such a value as to correspond to about 17% partial ionic character for an isolated phosphorus-chlorine bond. The resonance integral between one ionic structure and another ionic structure would have to be estimated, with use of the expressions given by Schomaker and Simonetta. The secular equation would then be solved, and the solution would give a value for the total energy of the phosphorus pentachloride molecule (uncorrected, however, for the energy of van der Waals repulsion of adjacent chlorine atoms), and also values for the contributions of the five ionic structures and the covalent structure to the normal state of the molecule. This final calculation should permit a statement to be made as to the extent to which the phosphorus atom has exceeded the octet in forming five bonds to chlorine.
There are a number of other problems related to this one, that might be tackled later on. One of them is the problem of the configuration of the TeCl4 molecule. The configuration of other halogen halides, such as IF7, might also be discussed.

HUMANISM AND PEACE
Dr. W. Lotmar
Binzenhofstrasse 23
Aarau, Switzerland
Dear Dr. Lotmar:
I am glad to have your letter of January 2 about the value of the length of the b axis of the muscle diagram.
I had already noticed that there was some difficulty in indexing your line (011). The measurements that we have made on your photographs lead pretty definitely to a value for b of about 5.3 A instead of 5.65. With this value of b (011) cannot be satisfactorily explained on the basis of your unit. We have accordingly decided that the unit has to be changed. At present it seems likely that the only change necessary is to double one of the other axes. This makes a much larger unit, and the agreement with the photograph is not nearly so convincing; nevertheless I myself think that there are good structural arguments to support the choice of the new unit.
We ourselves are trying to make some samples of crystalized muscle, but do not know whether we are going to be successful or not.
As to the fibrin diagram of Rudall, we succeeded in indexing all of the reflections, with a unit that has two small axes and one very large one. I have now asked Rudall to make some more photographs, since he still has the specimen of crystallized fibrin.
I am looking forward to receiving your new reprints.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Mr. Henry Allen Moe
John Simon Guggenhiem Memorial Foundation
551 Fifth Avenue
New York 17, N.Y.
Dear Henry:
I am sorry to bother you at this moment, but I would be
grateful to you for a word of advice on the following matter. I remember that you have helped in setting up some non-profit foundations, which is the matter which interests me now.
A friend of mine is interested in using his money for the
assistance of young men who will become outstanding. He has in the past helped young men to attend medical school, and he has been rather dissatisfied with the results - the men all have turned out to be prosperous practitioners.
In talking with him, I have said that I think that the
Harvard Society of Fellows has been about as successful as any group that I know about (I have also mentioned the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to him). He seems to be interested in the idea of setting up a Society of Fellows, perhaps at the California Institute of Technology. However, I think that he is not very sympathetic to some of the members of our Board of Trustees; and, although I have not discussed this matter with him, he may object to turning the money over to the California Institute of Technology it-self.
Do you think that a scheme might be worked out under which the Society of Fellows, probably not called the California Institute of Technology Society of Follows, could be set up as an independent foundation? The Harvard Society of Fellows was patterned to some extent after the Fellowship of Trinity College of Cambridge. Trinity College is, of course, an independent foundation; and, although the Harvard Society of Fellows is under the control of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, I think that its founders had in mind that it would be something like Trinity College, in its relation to the University, aside, of course, from the preparation of students for their university examinations that Trinity College carries out. Do you think that there are serious objections to a plan that I
Mr. Moe
1/25/52
might propose to my friend, that he set up an independent foundation, that might be tied in, in a friendly way, to the California Institute of Technology, the Mount Wilson Observatory, and the Huntington Library and Art Gallery? I would suppose that the Foundation would, in the course of time at any rate, have its own house in Pasadena; that it would consist of several Senior Follows, in the main stuff members of the three institutions (perhaps with some exceptions), who would also be the trustees of the Foundation, in the way that the Fellows of an Oxford or Cambridge college are the trustees of the Foundation of the College, and that younger men would receive appointments, for a first three-year term, and perhaps a second terra, with stipends of the order of the best present post-doctorate fellowships. These men, after appointment, would be free essentially to carry on their work in the way that they thought beat - they might be, and usually presumably would be, associated with one of the three Pasadena institutions, or they might hold the fellowships elsewhere. Some of then might, in fact, be graduate students working for the doctor's degree. The emphasis in their selection would be on extraordinary quality, in the same way as in the Harvard Society of Follows.
I estimate that about three million dollars of endowment
would be available ultimately, with about one million dollars available at once. An income of about $40,000 would, I think, permit the immediate appointment of a half dozen junior fellows, or perhaps
eight, and the number would ultimately be tripled.
I would be grateful to you if you would send as a statement about ideas that occur to you immediately, in order that I might have the benefit of them when I next talk with my friend (Mr. Bantrell), on February 7. If plans develop in a satisfactory way, I shall hope to ask you for further advice later on. I am especially interested to have your opinion in general about my suggestion.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

To Gunnar Bergman
From Linus Pauling
Jan. 29, 1952
Subject: Intermetallic compound AuPb2
In the Strukturbericht, vol. 3, page 612, there is a paper by H. Perlitz on alloys of gold and lead. He reports that the compound Au2Pb has the C15 structure, with a = 7.91 A.
He also reports that there is a cubic phase AuPb2, with a = 16.14 A. This corresponds to about 52 gold atoms and 104 lead atoms in the unit cube. The gold atoms are about 20 percent smaller than the lead atoms; hence this is a structure of a somewhat different sort from those that we have been investigating; in this structure there are more large atoms than small atoms.
The total number of atoms, about 156, is close to the total number for the phases that you have just been investigating, 162; but the sizes of the atoms make it unlikely that the structures are related.
I suggest that you have Dr. Waugh make a sample of AuPb2, by the
method described in the paper, and that you prepare a powder photograph,
and attempt to determine the lattice and space group, and ultimately the
structure.
