Lawyer
Two and one half hours ago you telephoned me to say that you had just learned that the Institute would be willing to provide me with a lawyer for my hearing on November 19, 1951, before the Industrial Employment Review Board. You said, however, that Mr. Wirin would not be acceptable to the Institute, which had instead selected Mr. Grant Cooper.
I may say that I think that Mr. Grant Cooper would have been satisfactory to me also, if I had known about him in time. However, the hearing is to begin at 10 A.M. on next Monday. There is only one working day between now and Monday, plus two days of the weekend. One week ago today I decided that, with the hearing only eleven days in the future, it would be necessary for me to take action in preparing for the hearing. Not having received an answer to my letter in which I asked that a lawyer be provided for me, I made contact with Mr. Wirin, talked with him for a while, and asked him to serve as my lawyer. Since then he and I have been preparing my case.
Under these circumstances I have had to decide, with regret, not to accept the suggestion by the Institute that Mr. Grant Cooper serve as my lawyer. I feel that too much damage might be done to the case by a change in lawyer at this late date, and I propose to continue with Mr. Wirin as my lawyer.
I hope that the California Institute of Technology will be represented at the hearing, by Mr. Cooper or someone else. I shall try to represent the Institute as well as myself in a satisfactory manner, and I have confidence that Mr. Wirin will also do so. Nevertheless, I think that it would be good if the Institute could be represented by another man also.
