Mr. Sidney Weinbaum
PMB 21593
Steilacoom, Washington
Dear Sidney:
Everything continues to go well here in Pasadena, except that I am having a hard time to get caught up in my work, after our trips to Hawaii and Oklahoma. I have several papers that I have to get written during the coming months. I am presenting three papers at the American Chemical Society 75th Anniversary Meeting in New York. These are all invited papers at symposia that are being given. One is on the structure of proteins - Dr. Corey is giving a similar paper, just before mine. A second is on the structure and properties of hemoglobin, and the third on the nature of bonds with triple bond character, involving two pairs of pi electrons, such as the bonds between the central atom and the oxygen atoms in an oxygen complex, the sulfate ion being an example. Also I am trying to get time to write an obituary of Professor Sommerfeld for SCIENCE - the editor has asked me to do so. You may not have noticed in the newspaper that Professor Sommerfeld died a couple of months ago.
Linda telephoned me today, and read me the puzzle in mathematical logic about the mathematician and the man waiting for the bus. She also read her answer to the puzzle. I did not have a chance to think about the puzzle itself enough to see what its meaning or possible solution is, although I gave an off-hand answer to it, immediately on her coming to the end of reading it; namely, that the mathematician is a woman. I think that her answer is a better one.
I am not sure that I have told you that Peter, while out riding in my Lincoln, was struck broadside by a drunk fellow who ran through a red light. My car was demolished, and I do not have a car at present - I have to rely on other members of the family for transportation. I am now planning to get a car in the East and to drive home from the New York meeting in it.
I hope that you are getting along all right and that you have satisfactory books to read. I hope too that you can be parolled [sic] before long.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Peter:
Mamma and I are planning to drive home in the Riley. However, we are first going up to Fredericton, New Brunswick, and we shall not have time to come to Woods Hole. Will you please tell Dr. Grundfest that I can't come.
I haven't done anything about getting you a Chicago paper. Why don't you write to Professor Robert Mulliken of the Physics Department, University of Chicago, and ask him to mail one to you.
Mamma and I are planning to make a leisurely trip home after the New York meetings, arriving just before school opens. I suppose that we shall be delayed in seeing you until then.
I think that Nottingham is going to sign up to pay
$50 a month until $1650 has been paid. I don't know how much the lawyer's bill will be - this means that we will come out a little bit in the hole from your use of the Lincoln that night.
As you requested, I have kept the remains of the Lincoln, and I can talk with you about how it is to be disposed of after you get home.
I am still working pretty hard on protein structures. Things are going along well.
Much love from
[Daddy]

Mr. Robert Casamajor, Chairman
Board of Directors, Mira Loma Water Co.
2036 North Pasadena Glen Road
Pasadena 8, California
Dear Mr. Casamajor:
I am writing to you to have presented to the Mira Loma Water Company the water pressure provided at our property at 3500 Fairpoint Street, by the Mira Loma Water Company. I hope that action can be taken on this matter without further delay. My wife has telephoned to the secretary and written to the Board of Directors in care of the secretary, without causing any action to be taken and without having any reply to her communication.
Our water pressure has always been low. During recent months it has been lower than before. Also, we have installed a dishwasher and the pressure is so low that the dishwasher does not operate properly if any other faucet is open. In addition, the pressure is so low that two rainbird sprinklers cannot be operated at the same time.
I have made an investigation in an effort to find out what the trouble is. The static pressure of the water delivered to our property ranges between 30 and 35 psi. The pressure measured at the meter, at the north edge of our property, drops to about 20 psi when one faucet is opened, and to 10 psi when three faucets are opened. There is very little drop in pressure from the meter to other parts of our property, so that the low dynamic pressure is not due to too great resistance or an obstruction in the pipes on our property.
It is my opinion that the static pressure of the water as delivered to our property is too low, and also that there is too great resistance in the meter, the delivery pipes, or valves involved in delivering water to the north boundary of our property. Possibly there is an obstruction of the pipe of the Mira Loma Water Company used for delivering water to the north boundary of our property. I request accordingly that the static pressure be increased, and also that an investigation be made as to the source of large resistance to flow and that this be rectified in such a way that the pressure drop when water is flowing be far less than at present.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
cc: Mrs. Hodges

8 August, 1951
Dear Mamma,
Please excuse me for not writing sooner. I hope you have seen the family letters,
however.
I have gone to see Linie twice during the preceeding two weekends. The first one, Bob
Madden was down and we drove up. I like very much being with them, though occaissionally I
am unhappy. We had roast duck last Saturday, and Linie's friend Gorman Hall and wife were
there. I hitchhiked up and back; it takes four hours each way, and I do not like it. However, it
costs $3.00 each way on the train, so I guess I shall hitch hike. Linie had loaned one of his cars
so that he cannot lend me one. I am somewhat disappointed, but there is nothing I can do. I
would like to travel around a bit, and I suppose I shall.
It is raining a good deal, last night and all today. Usually the weather is fine. I am
working reasonably hard, but right now I do not know what to do. I work with radioactive
potassium K42, which is somewhat dangerous, so I must be careful.
I have been getting along fairly well with my roommates. There are six beds, three above
three. I am now in a lower, but the fellow above moves rather violently and wakens me. Only
one fellow is rather inconsiderate. Actually, I am not in the room very much of the time.
I have been going to beach parties occasionally. We have lobsters and beer. It is very
good. I have run two parties so far, but it is work and I lose money.
You will arrive in Boston on the 29th. I do not think I can get there until the 1st however I may well see you in New York. I do not yet have a ride home, though I am working on it.
Linda has written enormous letters. In one she said I must write so Mamma will not
think I am dead.
The summer has not been, I fear, my happiest. It has been pleasant, but sort of lonely.
But life is life, and anything new is good, I guess, at least for a while. I fear my feeling for
Mariette are greater than deeper than I realized.
Please tell Daddy that I am sorry I ruined his car. Also remind him of the four possible
cars to ruin, I picked the one that had something more between the car and the road than my
head.
Much love,
Peter
*With apologies to Linda

Professor Richard S. Bear
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge 39, Massachusetts
Dear Dr. Bear:
My son Peter has written to me from Woods Hall that he has heard about a new structure for collagen that you have developed. He said that Professor Schmitt gave a talk there, which he was not able to attend because of having to keep at work on an experiment that had been started, but that someone who had attended the lecture said that you had found a structure for collagen different from the one that Professor Corey and I have proposed.
I had tried hard to find some other structure for the collagen molecule, before we published our account of the 3-chain structure, but without success. I am, of course, very interested in the problem, and would be grateful to learn about anything that you have done along these lines. I expect to describe our structure of collagens again in the talk on protein structures that I am giving in New York next month.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
LP:kh

Pasadena 4.
28th August, 1951
Dear Professor Pauling,
It was nice to hear from you on returning from holiday yesterday.
I am sorry that Oster is rather misinformed about our intentions with regard to nucleic acid. Wilkins and others are busily engaged in working out the interpretation of the desoxyribosenucleic acid X-ray photographs and it would not be fair to them, or to the efforts of the laboratory as a whole, to-hand these over to you. Wilkins has, of course, obtained a good deal of information already from his optical studies and it is natural that he should wish to carry through the X-ray investigations.
I was not able to attend the Gordon Conference which opened at New Hampton yesterday but Wilkins is attending and will be talking about his optical work.
With very best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
J.T. Randall

Dear Dr. Perutz:
I thank you for your letter of August 17. Professor Corey and I have been very pleased that you should have found the 1.5 Å spacing in fibrous proteins of the α-keratin type. In one of our papers we had mentioned it, as observed by Macarthur for porcupine quill tip. Your recognition of the presence of this reflection as a rather reliable indication of the presence of the 3.7-residue helix seems to me to be very important.
I am not at all sure that this helix is present in feather rachis. However, Professor Corey and I have pointed out in a short article that will appear in Nature that the absence of this reflection does not eliminate this helix, since the two chains proposed for the unit could be just at a phase with one another.
Professor Corey and I have found some new sheet structures—two new pleated sheets, which will be described in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and also another sheet of a new type, which we call a rippled sheet.
Sincerely yours,
LP:kh
Linus Pauling
P.S. We enjoyed Kendrew's visit very much. I wish that you could come to see us sometime.
