- Letter from Dore Schary, MGM Studios, to LP RE: States that he is interested to hear about the scientists’ visit, but declines LP’s request to let the foreign chemists visit the MGM Studios. Schary cites a blanket policy turning down such requests due to costly work interruptions. There is a note in the upper left-hand corner: “Mrs Heacocls: Read this to Dr. Chester McCloskey, ONR Green St.” [Letter from LP to Schary, August 16, 1951] [Letter from LP to Schary, August 27, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1951), #378.5]

- Letter from LP to Dr. F. Bohlman, Organic Chemistry Institute, RE: States that he put off the problem raised in Bohlman’s letter because he was working on the structure of proteins so he does not have much to say. Recommends that Bohlmann contact Dr. Hans Kuhn for help with polyines. [Letter from Bohlmann to LP, June 10, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1951), #37.18]

Professor Richard S. Bear
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge 39, Massachusetts
Dear Dr. Bear:
My son Peter has written to me from Woods Hall that he has heard about a new structure for collagen that you have developed. He said that Professor Schmitt gave a talk there, which he was not able to attend because of having to keep at work on an experiment that had been started, but that someone who had attended the lecture said that you had found a structure for collagen different from the one that Professor Corey and I have proposed.
I had tried hard to find some other structure for the collagen molecule, before we published our account of the 3-chain structure, but without success. I am, of course, very interested in the problem, and would be grateful to learn about anything that you have done along these lines. I expect to describe our structure of collagens again in the talk on protein structures that I am giving in New York next month.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
LP:kh

- Letter from LP to S. C. Lind, Editor, Journal of Physical and Colloid Chemistry, RE: Discusses the Kasimir Fajan’s unjustified review of LP’s book, General Chemistry. Asks him to publish some form of statement that will give readers a better idea of the truth of the matter. [Letter from Lind to LP, September 17, 1951] [Letter from LP to Noyes, October 3, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Journal of the American Chemical Society), #191.1]
- Letter from President T. W. J. Taylor, University College of the West Indies, to LP RE: Says that the recent hurricane did some damage, but that it was not excessive. States that it did, however, postpone the completion of the new laboratory until mid-December. This means LP’s visit will no longer be an opening, but rather a scientific meeting. States that he would like to carry on with the original plans if LP is willing. [Note from Taylor to LP, August 8, 1951] [Letter from LP to Taylor, September 25, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Taylor, T. W.), #405.7]
