Dear Bachman:
June 1, 1951
Dear Sir:
Some time ago, in attempting to support the action of the Board of Requests of the University of Hawaii in withdrawing their invitation to me to speak at the dedication of the new chemistry building, you announced that you were concerned about the kind of public statements that I might make. I feel it is not I, but rather you yourself, about whose public statements you should have been concerned.
You have repeated and given wide public dissemination to
half-truths and insinuations about me that have been made by unprincipled men, in part under the protection of congressional immunity.
In addition, you have made some oral statements about me for which you must be held responsible. These statements have been reported to me by students and faculty members of the University whose honesty and integrity are apparent. The statements
were made at meetings of the Student Council and the loral chapter of the American Association of University Professors. They are essentially the following:
(1) "We have reliable information, from a naval officer, that Dr. Pauling has not been allowed to work for the Office of Naval Research since 1942 because of his affiliations."
(2) "We have information that would blow Dr. Pauling's reputation sky-high if necessary."
These statements are not true. As to the first statement, I have continued to work for the Navy up to the present time, and have never been refused clearance for any job. The second statement is untrue because my actions throughout my life have been such that no such information could exist.
I hold you responsible for having made these slanderous statements about me.
