Charge on x-ray tube
Dr. Shoemaker has told me that an inquiry has come to him from the Business Office about one Machlett x-ray tube insert (copper target), with regard to inventory of Navy Capital Equipment. The Navy identification number for this tube is 91726-081,001, serial number F-2661, and was acquired on March 23, 1950.
This tube should not have been classified as capital equipment. The only other x-ray tube that to my knowledge was purchased with N6onr-24432 (Chemistry 27) funds was classified as expendable, as were two Kenotron rectifier tubes. X-ray tubes and rectifier tubes have no value after the filaments have burned out, and the filament may be expected to burn out after approximately 1000 hours of service. Provision for purchase of x-ray tubes was made in the budget for our Navy contract to cover the tube cost of the total x-ray exposure time expected under the contract. Such tubes should therefore be considered as expendable items.
Would you please request the Navy to reclassify as an expendable item the tube mentioned above?
