Editor
Honolulu Star Bulletin
Hawaii, T.H.
Dear Sir:
I have been given a clipping from the Star Bulletin, March 30, 1951, which has the heading "Lawyer Claims Pauling Balked at Taking Oath."
The article that appears in your paper states in fit straightforward way that Harry J. Engelbright says that I refused to swear under oath that I am not a Communist.
I am writing to say that, in case that the article in your paper repeats accurately the statements of Mr. Engelbright, who was, I believe the counsel of the California State Investigating Committee on Education that subpenad [sic] me in order to get my testimony about the loyalty affirmation at the University of California, I would say that Mr. Engelbright has told the truth, but not the whole truth.
I few days ago I sent you a copy of my letter to the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii. In this letter I state, as I have stated before, that I issued a voluntary statement which included the sentences "I am not a Communist. I have never been a Communist. I have never been involved with the Communist Party." I swore to the truth of this statement before the State Senate Committee, in the presence of Mr. Engelbright. Your article does not mention that I swore to the truth of this statement. After having testified to the truth of this statement under oath, a senator asked me if I would now answer questions as to my political beliefs. I again refused to permit inquiry to be made into my political beliefs.
Let me refer you to the first paragraph on page 3 of my letter to the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, mailed on March 30, 195l, a copy of which was mailed to you. Here a statement is made about why I found it necessary to refuse to allow forcible inquiry to be made into my own political beliefs, although at the same time I have resisted the efforts to force me into a situation where it would appear that I have secrets to hide.
I am sure that you will correct the implication of your article, to the effect that I have not sworn under oath that I am not a Communist.
Honolulu Star Bulletin
Let me repeat that if your article reproduces correctly Mr. Engelbright's statement, then Mr. Engelbright is guilty of suppressing a pertinent part of the truth. If Mr. Engelbright did not suppress a part of the truth in his communication to Mr. William B. Stevenson, but your article is correct in reproducing information given to you by Mr. William B. Stevenson, then Mr. Stevenson is guilty of suppressing a pertinent part of the truth.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
