- Letter from Ernest Becker, Department of Chemistry, Polytechnic Institute of Boston, to LP RE: States that he wrote Dr. Hirschfelder
because the Fischer-Hirschfelder models are incapable of making a cyclopentadiene for a fulvene ring. States that he was advised
to write LP about the inter-atomic distances in fulvenes and cyclopentadienes. Inquires if LP has any data on the fulvene
nucleus. There is a handwritten note in black pen in the left margin: “Verner - What would you say? LP.” [Letter from LP to
Schomaker February 3, 1951, Letter from LP to Becker April 9, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1951), #37.18]
- Letter from M. Vernon King, Department of Physics, Pennsylvania State College, to LP RE: Asks for LP’s aid and advice. King’s
research fellowship was terminated “for reasons of loyalty.” King thinks he suspected to be a member of the Communist Party.
He is searching for a new job that is not supported by federal funds. [Letters from LP to King December 28, 1950, January 26, 1951] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (King, Vernon M.), #198.11]
- Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Executive Secretary, Gates and Crellin Laboratories, to Dr. George H. Coleman, Kresge-Hooke Scientific
Library, Wayne University, RE: Encloses a photograph of LP and biographical material. States that LP will want to prepare
a manuscript of his talk at Wayne University; however, he might not be able to do so before the lecture. Asks when the deadline
is and how many words the manuscript should be. States that LP will be able to prepare an abstract before the lecture. [Letters
from Coleman to LP 1-5-5, January 23, 1951] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1951s.7]
- Letter from Dr. Irvin Fuhr, Executive Secretary, Division of Research Grants, National Institutes of Health to LP RE: Notifies
him that it is time to send in his application if he is interested in extending his current NIH grant. Discusses how much
money has been guaranteed him (20,000 dollars) and what to do if he is requesting more funds than that. Encloses application
blanks and instructions on how to prepare them. Requests that he notify NIH if he does not intend to renew his funding. Handwritten
note in right margin: “application blanks attached.” Handwritten note at top of page: “RBC. See p. 6 E. of Instructions Regarding
Progress Report. BW.” [Memo from Gilmore to LP September 6, 1950, Memo from LP to Green February 1, 1951] [Filed under LP Science: (United States Public Health Service: “X-Ray Diffraction Investigations of the Structure of Protein
Molecules,” grant RG 1987, [changed to H-2143 (Chemistry 1950)], 1948-1958), Box #14.041, Folder #41.1]
