Dr. John W. Harris
Thorndike Memorial Laboratory
Boston City Hospital
Boston, Massachusetts
Dear Dr. Harris:
I have been interested to see your paper in the October issue of the Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Dr. Rich has told me about your results after his return from Woods Hole.
Dr. Itano and our other collaborators and I are planning to send a letter to Nature about sickle cell anemia. A paper by Peruts and Mitchison appeared in Nature, in which there is a discussion of the mechanism that we had described in detail, in such a way, however, as to indicate to the reader that it is new. The only element of novelty in it, so far as I can see, is the statement that the phenomenon involves crystallization of the hemoglobin. In our discussions we have described this as pseudo-crystallization, or aggregation or a sort of crystallization.
Some experimental results that we have obtained with use of the ultracentrifuge indicate that sickle cell anemia hemoglobin undergoes aggregation not in the form of crystals, but in another form. This is, of course, what you communicate in your paper, and your discussion of the mechanism is also based on our proposal.
I am writing now to find out from you whether you feel that your experiments have shown unambiguously that the birefrigent aggregates that you obtain are indeed tactoids rather than crystals. I know that there is some difficulty in distinguishing microscopic tactoids from microscopic crystals, and I would be grateful to you for telling me how confident you are that you are observing tactoids, rather than crystals.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
P.S. Would you also send me a reprint of your note. LP.

From: Sidney Weinbaum
To: Linus Pauling, Calif. Inst. of Technology, Pasadena, Calif.
Dear Linus:
It has been very pleasant to receive your letter and hear about you and some of the happenings around the laboratory. I am very sorry to hear that Bob Smith left school and I hope that he will soon recover completely.
My life here has assumed a very uniform and monotonous character. It is well regulated and disciplined. No physical hardships but, let us say, just humdrum existence. Today, by the way, I "celebrate" the three-months' mark of my incarceration,
I see most of the current magazines and the library is not a bad one, but no scientific books are available at all. I am allowed to buy a few technical books. It has to be done by me personally from here and I’ll be thankful if you let me know whether any interesting books have appeared lately.
There is neither privacy nor possibility for concentration here as I share my cell with nine other people. Unfortunately too, I have, and shall continue having for a long time to come, an upper bunk.
Breakfast is at the ungodly hour of 5:45 A.M. and the first "count" (we are counted four times daily) at 630. We have to stand up for count, so even missing breakfast allows only an extra hour of sleep. After the count we go back to sleep for another hour but I usually utilize this quiet period for reading.
I have a limited access to a piano and I hope that I shall be allowed to buy some music. I have learned to type and continue practicing. I am joining a small French class which is very well conducted by an inmate who taught once upon a time in one of our Southern Universities.
I heard from David that the structure of (NH4)6MnMo9O32••8H2O has worked out as you predicted. David’s letter came a few days ago and made me feel quite nostalgic.
It was most wonderful to see Lina and Selina and I dread to think that a long time may elapse before I see them again.
With best wishes for Christmas and New Year
Yours friendly

Miss Charlotte E. Moore
National Bureau of Standards
Washington 25, D.C.
Dear Miss Moore:
I am writing to ask if you could give me some values of ionization potentials of the heavier elements.
A recent change in the presumably correct value for the energy of dissociation of diatomic fluorine has led to a difficulty about the electron affinity of fluorine, as calculated from thermo- chemical data, with use of the Born-Haber cycle. The value obtained in this way is less than that for chlorine, which seems unlikely. I have decided to try to obtain reliable values of electron affinities of halogens by the extrapolation of values of ionization potentials for iso-electronic atoms. The first ionization potential of helium, the second of lithium, and so on give a value for the electron affinity of hydrogen in excellent agreement with the value calculated by quantum mechanical methods. A similar treatment of the data in your Volume 1 for neon and the corresponding sequence and for argon and the corresponding sequence leads to values 99 kcal mole-1 for the electron affinity of fluorine and 91 kcal mole-1 for the electron affinity of chlorine. I have not yet carried out these extrapolations with great care, and the final values may be changed by a percent or two.
Now, I would like to make similar calculations to obtain the electron affinities of bromine and iodine. Could you tell me what your best values are for the first ionization potential of krypton, the second ionization potential of rubidium, and so on, perhaps as far as molybdenum; and also for the first ionization potential of xenon, the second ionization potential of cesium, and so on, about as far as neodymium. The values for krypton and xenon are, of course, given in your Table 23 - it is the other values that I need.
Let me express my thanks to you for your fine work in collecting the data on atomic energy levels and making them available in convenient form. I have made a good bit of use of Volume 1 already. When may we expect to have Volume 2?
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Professor Bjerrum:
I am very pleased to have your letter of October 25, in which you discuss again the number of configurations of an ice crystal.
I have thought about the question some more, and I must say -that I believe that your new calculation contains an error, as did your old one. I am sure that the correct result is given either by the two methods that I described in my paper in 1935, or by the method described in my letter of October 18 to you.
I believe that the error that you have made in your second paper occurs in the fourth paragraph. I think that you are not justified in assigning weights to the different configurations of an ice crystal before a water molecule has been added to it on the basis of the number of configurations of the ice crystal after that molecule has been added. It is true, as you point out, that after the water molecule has been added to the ice crystal there are six different ways of orienting that water molecule, corresponding to the six edges of the tetrahedron, and that four of these ways involve the bonding of this water molecule to the ice crystal by means of one proton of this water molecule and one of the remaining part of the ice crystal, and the other two ways involve bonding with use of two protons from the remaining part of the ice crystal, or of no proton. However, this does not mean that the remaining part of the ice crystal is to be considered as having probability 2/3 that it will present one and only one proton to the water molecule to be added. The reason that it does not mean this is that the water molecule that is added can assume either one of two configurations, in case that it uses only one of its protons in the attachment to the remaining part of the ice crystal. The fact that it can be oriented in two ways means that after this molecule is added to the crystal the number of configurations corresponding to this kind of attachment is doubled. Hence the fact that by your calculation
Professor Bjerrum
you find that the probability is 2/3 for attachment of this sort means that you are counting attachments of this kind twice, and attachments of the other kinds only once. As I pointed out in my earlier letter, it is in fact correct to assign the weight 1 to the configuration of the remaining part of the ice crystal in which it presents two protons, the weight 1 to each of the two configurations in which 1 and only 1 proton is presented, and the weight 1 to the configuration in which no proton is presented. Then, the configurations are doubled in number after another water molecule is added when the attachment is by means of a single proton from this water molecule only. This means that the number of configurations is increased by the factor 3/2 for every water molecule that is added, and accordingly that the entropy has the value given in my 1935 paper, and not the values given in your earlier letter and in your second letter.
I hope that you will write to me again in case that you do not agree with this argument.
My wife joins me in sending best wishes to you for the New Year.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
