Dear Mamma,
I love you. We have been having a reasonably wonderful time. We just returned from
Paris where it is terribly hot.
I have now two weeks to use. I think I shall go to Vienna.
As you know I inquired about going to school in London. Much to my surprise, Daddy
seems to favor the idea. I don't why; he hasn't in the past.
The family seems assured that I am staying here, which is not a sure case.
If I stay, I shall of course need some things. Chiefly clothes and books. My clothes are
in that footlocker that red suitcase. Do not bother about them yet. We do not know yet. I will
want some other things so let them stay a while.
It would be three long years hard work but learning much. I shall have to persuade you
to come visit me.
Please tell Daddy to send his letter to c/o American Express, Vienna. I will be there, I
hope.
Crellin wrote a remarkable letter. I should copy it & send it to you. He went on the
assumption that I was staying here and used no question marks. A remarkable boy, that.
Someone here said it would be better for me not to stay here where I am privileged
because of my nationality. I have always been privileged because of my name. At Cal I would
not be very much it is too big. I would have to be someone for myself.
I am somewhat afraid of being myself and controling myself. Of not having guiding
hands.
Much love,
Peter
