Dr. Tang
Theory of the lead-thallium alloys
I have developed a theory of the lead-thallium alloys, and similar binary alloys involving solid solutions with ordered structures. Perhaps you would be willing to carry out some calculations in connection with the theory.
I assume that an ordered structure PbTl3 or, taking into account the solid solution, Pb(Pb,Tl)3, exists, with slightly greater stability than the disordered structure. The difference in stability - that is, in enthalpy, is small enough so that the entropy of mixing has to be taken into consideration, both for the liquid and for the crystalline phase.
I assume that for each phase the enthalpy can be rep1resented as a linear function of the composition, in mole fraction, and that the entropy of mixing can be calculated by use of the ideal formula.
I then write, for a given temperature T, the following expressions for the free energies, per mole, of the crystalline phase:
S(c) = Hc -TSc + hc x RT x lnX - RD(3/4 - x)ln(3/4 - x) + RD 3/4 ln 3/4
S(1) = H1- TS1 + h1 x -RT x ln x -RT(1 - x)ln(1-x)
For our purposes we may neglect the first three terms in the formula for S(l), and make a plot simply of the free energy of the liquid arising from the entropy of mixing. This is a loop, hanging down from the end-points, something like a catenary. Now let us represent the free energy of the crystal. The parts not dependent on the entropy of mixing can be represented by a straight line beginning at the left (corresponding to pure lead) slightly higher than the curve for the liquid, and dropping toward the right - it extends only as far as the point 75% Tl. The entropy contribution is a sort of catenary, only 3/4 as deep, hanging from the ends of this slant line. It intersects the curve for the free energy of the liquid at two places, or at any rate at one place.

Dear Paul:
I have checked up with Dr. Dickey about the publication of the adsorption measurements and surface area measurements that Mr. Haldeman made, with the following results.
Dr. Dickey and I believe that it would be better for Mr. Haldeman to publish the results separately. Dr. Dickey would like to be able to refer to the results, and to use the surface area measurements in connection with the publication of his investigations. Moreover, there is another suggestion that we would like to make. Dr. Dickey has prepared some gels that he thinks are better than the earlier ones, and if possible we would like to have Mr. Haldeman make similar measurements with them. I have asked him to send six samples directly to you, with information about them.
I am not sure that I have told you how much pleasure we had, Ava Helen and I, during our trip through the South, because of the fact that you and Leila had preceded us. Everywhere that we went we heard very complementary statements that you had made about us. You paved the way for our visit wonderfully well.
I am looking forward to seeing you in connection with the work of our ONR Committee. I am glad that you are willing to serve on it.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:ph

Dear Dr. Daudel:
I am pleased to learn from your letter that you are considering making a visit to the United States during the period May to September, 1951. This is in general not the best time to visit our universities, because many people are away, on vacation, during part of the time; however, I am sure that you would find the visit profitable.
As to the California Institute of Technology, I would say that a large amount of work will be under way throughout this period, and that most of the workers in the laboratory will be at hand at any time during the summer. Our academic year continues through May and the first half of June, and begins again at the end of September. It is likely that you would find Professor Schomaker and other members of our staff in residence during the summer.
I myself have been planning tentatively to go to Stockholm in July, 1951, in order to attend the meeting of the International Union of Crystallography. My plan is not yet definite - it may well turn out that I shall stay at home, instead. However, I do have this plan in mind. If I were to go to Europe that summer, (my wife would also go), we would leave about June 20, I would judge, and would stay for two months, or perhaps three, depending on how things turn out. I would expect to be back in Pasadena by about the middle of September.
Even if I were to be away at the time when you came to visit our Laboratory, you could count on being well taken care of; Professor Schomaker an other members of our staff would see that all of the facilities here were put at your disposal.
Dr. Daudel
Paris, France
As to your question about the American laboratories specializing in organic microsynthesis, I would say that I am not sure as to which are the best ones. I know that Professor Paul L. Kirk has been doing work along these lines, specializing I believe in the identification of minute amounts of materials, rather than the synthesis, I shall try to get some additional information, and attach it to this letter as a postscript.
My wife joins me in sending best regards to you and to Madame Daudel. We all remember with great pleasure our visit with you, and especially the trip to Fontainebleau.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:ph

July 20, 1950
Dear Peter:
I trust that you received your draft card all right. I wrote to the draft board, saying that it was being forwarded to you, but that you were on a trip to Europe, with no fixed address, and that there might be some delay in its reaching you. I don't know if you have any basis for appealing the classification or not I am not sure that physics students are considered to be deferrable.
I was interested to see the academic standing of the top 25% of each class. The best student in the Institute now seems to be Walter B. Kand, who had a grade point average of 4.000. The next man (Haire, a sophomore) had 3.800. You were number 28 in your class, with average 3.040. Peter Verdier was number 8, with 3.510. You might be interested to know that you beat William R. Smythe, who had 3.030.
We are getting along all right. We feel some concern about the situation at the University of California - for example John O'Gorman now seems pretty sure that he will lose his job, the Regents meet again today. I myself am having a little difficulty with our own Institute. I hope that you are having a fine time. Love to you and Linus and Anita.
Yours,
[Linus Pauling]

July 25, 1950
Dear Peter:
I opened a letter to you from the Bank of America, in which it was stated that your account was overdrawn by 50 cents. A statement from the bank arrived a few days ago, which I also opened. It contained four checks, and I judge that after the checks had been written there was a balance of 60 cents to your credit. However, the bank seems to make service charges, which seem to have brought you down to a deficit of 50 cents. I accordingly wrote to the bank, asking that 50 cents be transferred to your account from mine, and that your account be closed out. This means that you should not write any more checks. I judge that it would have been proper for you to inform the bank that you wanted the account closed out.
I have got some information about the draft situation, from the Navy (I have some ONR work going on). At the present time the people being drafted seem to be in the 26-year-old class. It is expected that it will be a good while - how long I do not know - before the 19-year-old class is called up. However, it is necessary, in case that a request for deferment is made, for it to be made within ten days of notification of 1A classification. I think that this means within ten days of receipt of the draft card by you - at any rate the board would probably take into consideration the delay in transit. I believe that ordinarily students who have begun the year's work in a university are allowed to finish it. It is possible that deferment will be given to students of physics, and I would suggest that you ask for deferment on the grounds that you are a physics student.
Please tell Anita and Linus that we saw the Chadwicks and some friends of theirs when we went to San Pedro a week or so ago. I spoke at a meeting of the Independent Progressive Party, which they attended. We are going over to have dinner with them on Sunday.
Love to all,
Linus Pauling:W

Mr. Alden H. Emery
American Chemical Society
1155 Sixteenth Street, N.W.
Washington 6, D.C.
Dear Alden:
I am writing to in answer to your letter of July 21, about the proposal that the A.C.S. designate a representative or representatives to serve on an advisory panel to the Committee on Food Protection of the National Research Council.
I think that it would be wise for the Society to make such an appointment. I think that it might well be to desirable to have more than one representative of the Society because of the importance of the question and the magnitude of the contribution that these representatives might make. Perhaps two would be a suitable number. I do not know the people in this field well enough to make recommendations.
I would think that it would be satisfactory for the president of the Society to make the appointment.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Daddy,
I was very happy to hear from you, and am sorry to bother you when I think you are pretty busy. Thank you for the information. I wrote to the draft board and asked to appeal, and also told them this address. They may write here or there. My GPA fell last term, and beating Rod Smythe is no great consolation.
I wish to ask your advice on something. I know already that you will not particularly like this idea, but please listen to the arguments.
I would like to stay in Europe to finish my undergraduate years. To this
effect I wrote CA Coulson, and asked him. My reasons for staying are numerous.
London is much more desirable place to live than Berkeley. The Continent is
available for travel by bicycle or motorbike. Although you know more about
it, I think I can learn as much about my subject at London as I can in
Berkeley. By careful picking of courses and indulgence on the part of Mr.
Coulson, I can learn a great deal. Furthermore, I think I can learn a great
deal more about the humanities etc. I would much prefer to go to London than
to Berkeley. Also, how are Berkeley's standards now?
Mr Coulson answered my letter very nicely. However, there are some difficulties. I cannot get into an English university for less than three years. That is and get a BS. The only possibility would be Bristol, and Coulson is writing Powell and Mott to see what they say. It would be easy to get into London for three years.
Now the only way in which this is feasible would be that I could do graduate work more or less during the last year and one half or so. If I can do a year of grad work here, and then return to the US for a Ph. D. in two years, then I lose no time.
At the present time the only possibilities are three years at London or possibly two at Bristol. I prefer London. If I can do grad work at London during the last year, do you think I can then take a year off my grad work in the US? And would two years at Bristol be better than there at London?
My chief purpose in life is to be a physicist, and therefore I work towards this end with greatest avidity. However, present life is worth something, and the great advantages to me in living here are worth a good deal.
If war breaks out, I would prefer to be here. If I am going to be drafted, I would rather waste a year here than spend a year in the army. And time here is not at all wasted, because I think it is a chance for a marvelous education. I would work harder at London than at Berkeley.
Also, if I return, do you think I should go to Berkeley or Caltech? I would like to get away, but I do not like Berkeley in many ways. How is it if everyone is fired?
This is a rather poor letter; the next one will probably be much better.
Please think about this. I would much prefer to stay here than go to Berkeley, or Caltech for that matter. I want to stay out of the army too.
Thanks ever so much.
Much Love,
[Peter]

TO Dr. Ewing
SUBJECT __Cu15Si4 and related substances
I note that on the reprint about Cu15Si4 you have made a note that the plane 640, which reflects strongly, corresponds to 375 electrons per unit. Would you verify this for me. Also the planes 552 and 633 are indicated as reflecting rather strongly. Would you check to see whether they truncate 640 or not.
You have noted that the normal valences for copper and silicon would lead to 390 electrons - with 5 1/2 for copper the number is 394. Now the electronegativity values might decrease the number of valence electrons. Copper is more electronegative than silicon, so that the silicon-copper bonds would tend to transfer electrons from silicon to copper. This electron transfer would, however, tend to be counterbalanced by an actual transfer of valence electrons, which would, contrary to what I have just said, increase the valences of both copper and silicon. However, perhaps the effect is only a small one; and it is possible that the valence of copper is, in this compound, somewhat less than the normal 5 l/2. It would have to be about 5 l/5 to give 375 valence electrons.
The strongest reflection is from 332. Would you tell me what the electron number is for this plane? I think that it may be of importance in stabilizing the compound Na15Pb4, which has the same structure. If lead has valency 2, Na15Pb4 would contain 92 valence electrons per unit cube. However, there probably is some electron transfer which might increase this number by as much as 16.
