  • Letter from Professor James Bonner to interested parties RE: Tells how Dr. Sidney Weinbaum will soon undergo trial, gives his history, tells how he was removed from his position as he was classified by the Army as a security risk and denied having been a Communist in the 30's, so they arrested him on counts of perjury. Explains that a group of his friends who are all professors (LP, James Bonner, Charles DePrima, Paul S. Epstein, and Verner Schomaker) are raising money for his defense, and writes to ask the recipient of the letter to contribute by sending checks to LP. • Letter from N. H. Furman to Dr. E. H. Volweier, President, American Chemical Society, RE: Writes to say that, to him, it seems important to bring to the attention of those in the armed forces the “importance of proper use of scientific training for the smoothest operation of industry, the educational system, various research institutes, and the military machine,” sharing the example of his colleague Dr. W. D. Cooke. [Letter from LP to Volwiler, July 24, 1950, Letter from Emery to Executive Committee, July 26, 1950] [Filed under LP Science: (American Chemical Society: Correspondence, 1950-1964), Box #14.006, Folder #6.1]
  • Letter from Alden H. Emery, Executive Secretary, American Chemical Society, to Councilors, American Chemical Society, RE: Attaches a questionnaire which is identical to the ones sent to one out of every ten members of the ACS, to fill out and return.
