Dear Erv:
I have just returned from a trip to New York, where I talked with representatives of some of the big foundations about the joint program of research in chemistry and biology that is being carried out at the California Institute of Technology, and our plans for the future.
Professor Beadle was with me, and we both feel that there is little doubt that continued support for our joint program can be obtained. We are, however, very worried that the lack of space will interfere seriously with the development of the program, and we hope that it will be possible to obtain funds to build the projected laboratory.
There is one change that should, we think, be made. We found that in general there was misunderstanding about our use of the expression medical chemistry. Apparently this term has been used in the past in a special way, and some of the people that we met misunderstood our program because of the use of the term. We are planning to drop this term, and in the future to refer simply to our joint program in chemistry and biology.
We are now working on a revised description of the program, and I shall send a copy of it to you in a few days.
Sincerely yours,
- Letter from LP to George Rieveschl, Jr., Director of Chemical Research, cc. Dr. Harry Crooks, Jr., Parke, Davis, and Company, RE: Informs him of Dr. J.D. Dunitz’s success concerning the structure of Chloromycetin. Explains the project that Dunitz is performing, including that he will be staying for the next academic year and would be needing support in order to continue his research. [Letter from Rieveschl to LP April 11, 1950] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Parke, Davis and Company), #310.2]
- Letter from LP to Joe Manford Parks RE: Apologizes for giving him false hopes of getting into graduate school. After examining his records, LP concludes that Parks was not admitted because he had grades of C’s in Calculus and Differential Equations, not to mention the tough competition. [Letter from Parks to LP March 19, 1950] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1950), #312.5]
- Letter from LP to Otto Horn RE: Declines the invitation to attend the meeting of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker in Frankfurt. [Letter from Horn to LP March 16, 1950] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (H: Correspondence, 1950), #166.1]
- Letter from LP to Prof. B. H. Sage, cc: Prof. Lacey, RE: Explains that a decision was made 16 years ago that all papers from the Division were to be labeled as contributions from the Gates and Crellin Laboratories. However, he feels that it seems appropriate to use this expression with papers representing the work of the Chemical Engineering Laboratory. Tells him to ask about this in a meeting of the Division. [Letter from Sage to LP March 20, 1950] [Filed under LP Biographical: Academia: (CIT: Materials re: Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, 1946-1964.), Box #1.021, Folder #21.3]
- Letter from Laszlo Tisza, Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to LP RE: Asks LP to make comments on his manuscript entitled, “Theory of Superconductivity.” Requests that LP send any of his written works which are relevant to his paper. Handwritten notes indicate that the letter was answered. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1950), #410.15]
- Letter from W. S. Fyfe, Assistant Lecture in Physical Chemistry, University of Otago, to LP RE: Asks LP to send him a reprint of LP’s paper which contains the values of screening constants published in Z. F. Krist. 81, 1 (1932). Discusses his studies of the conditions governing the stability of complex ions, especially metal-ammines and asks for LP’s comments. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (F: Correspondence, 1950), #128.15]
- Memo from LP to Dean Watson RE: Recommends that Prof. Robert Corey’s salary be increased from $7,000 to $7,500. [Filed under LP Biographical: Academia: (California Institute of Technology: Administrative Files, 1938-1971.), Box #1.030, Folder #30.8]
