Application to Lilly
I believe that this is the last year of the Lilly Insulin Fund.
I suggest that you consider applying to Lilly for a 10-year grant, perhaps running as high as $10,000 per year. I know that they are asking some grants of this order of magnitude. This would be for your own work - that is, I suggest that you think of some phase of your work in which Lilly might have an interest, such as the enzyme work, and prepare a brief application to them for a long-term grant for support of it.

Dear Franz:
I am glad to see your new articles in the Financial Times, and also glad to have a reprint of your paper on glass. I had already read the article on glass, with much interest.
As to the article in the Financial Times, there is not much that you say with which I would disagree. You already know that I have a very strong feeling about the importance for Britain of improving engineering and technical education. I agree with you that it would be very valuable to have an outstanding institute of technology in England, similar to ours. I myself have felt, however, that the important step forward would result from building up education in engineering at Oxford and Cambridge. It seems to me that one great difficulty in Britain is that engineers are looked down on, by, for example, the pure scientists at Oxford and Cambridge, and that if this attitude could be changed there would be a greater chance for attracting outstandingly able young men into the engineering and technical fields. I feel sure that good work in technology cannot be carried on if it is isolated from good work in the basic sciences.
I am glad to see that you did not agree so completely as did Philbrick in his Endeavour article with the generally accepted idea that all fundamental progress in science is made in Europe, and none in the United States. I have recently been talking with an outstandingly able American physicist, from the east coast, who stated, after a trip he made recently to Europe, that there was no basic science going on in the world at the present time except in the United States. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in between these extremes.
One minor point - about comic-strip addicts: perhaps you know that I am one of these and I do not share your concern about the part played by comic-strip addicts in determining the future of the world. Some people, you know, express just as much concern about modern-art addicts.
I am continuing to devote most of my time to applications of chemistry to medicine, but am also working on the theory of metals.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. Allan M. Butler
Harvard Medical School
Massachusetts General Hospital
Boston 14, Massachusetts
Dear Dr. Butler:
I think that the idea, mentioned in your letter of December 23, about a meeting in New York City on atomic energy with a sub-title such as "For War or Peace under Security Restrictions or with Academic Freedom" is a very good one, but I also think that it would be difficult to arrange a program because it is hard to get suitable speakers.
I do not know if Lilienthal could be persuaded to speak, but I am rather doubtful, since he has not yet left his job. I feel sure that Vannevar Bush and Karl Compton would refuse. Probably Dr. Morrison would accept the invitation. As to myself, I am afraid that my schedule for the next few months is already too full to permit me to plan to come. I am, in fact, having trouble even answering my letters, which is why my answer to your letter is delayed.
Perhaps you could get Charles Coryell, at M.I.T., or Victor Weisskopf, also at M.I.T. Either one of then would be excellent.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W

Dr. Itano Linus Pauling Jan. 20, 1950
Nature of sickle cell hemoglobin
I think that sickle cell hemoglobin and normal human hemoglobin represent two ways of coiling the polypeptide chain characteristic of hemoglobin molecule, and that these two ways are rather stable, being the two stable configurations of the molecule. This is, of course, the globin molecule.
The evidence available so far indicates the difference in isoelectric point is not the result of a difference in amino acid composition of the globin. How, it has been reported, that when hemoglobin is denatured and renatured, it may occur in either one of two forms, differing in isoelectric point by 1.2 pH units. I think that these two forms correspond to normal human hemoglobin and sickle ceil anemia hemoglobin. Would you look up the article by Gralen and tell me what the isoelectric points are that he reported for the two forms.
I believe that we should repeat Gralen's work, and see if we can prove this point.
Moreover, I think that the two peaks which appear in your electrophoretic patterns of globin, both normal globin and sickle cell anemia globin, correspond to these two configurations. If we assume that the isoelectric point of globin is about the same as that of hemoglobin, 7 or a little less, and draw straight lines on a plot of mobility against pH to intersect the pH axis, the two lines passing through the observed mobilities for the slow components and the fast components in acetate buffer, at pH 4.64, we find that the intercepts differ by 0.23 pH units. The phosphate points do not give this result, the mobilities of the two components being reported
Dr. Itano -2- 1/20/50
as differing very little. I think that this may be due to a tendency of one of the globins to find phosphate preferentially, thus changing its charge. The place where the phosphate is bound is presumably the same place where I believe that heme is bound because I believe that you found that there was the same difference between sickle cell anemia hemoglobin and normal hemoglobin in phosphate buffer as in other buffer.
It seems to me that your experiments with globin, showing that the same globin comes from normal hemoglobin and sickle cell hemoglobin, is pretty good evidence for our point. I think that to repeat Gralen's experiment with the two hemoglobins would just about clinch the matter. Would you talk with me about making plans to have this work carried out?
It seems to me that one thing that we should consider is the possibility of converting one hemoglobin into the other simply by gentle heating, for a long time, at a temperature below the denaturation temperature. I suggest that we try the effect of heating both normal hemoglobin and sickle cell hemoglobin for several days, say, at a temperature of 58 °C, and then making electrophoretic patterns.

Dr. Henri A. Levy
Chemistry Division
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Post Office Box P
Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Dear Henri:
I am sorry to learn from your letter that you think it likely that it would not be possible for me to visit the laboratory at Oak Ridge while assisting as a consultant in the scientific program of the laboratory and while taking part in the seminar in August.
As I said to you and the other members of your group when the question of my serving as a consultant was brought up, I do not want to serve as a consultant on scientific questions under study at the laboratory if it is not possible for me to be in the laboratory and to see the apparatus. It was stated then that this would require security clearance, and I agreed to come under these conditions. I want to repeat that I think it would be a waste of effort on my part to attempt to serve as a consultant without having knowledge of the nature of the apparatus being used. I had not in the past received classified information in this field, and it has been my opinion that no need had arisen to justify my receiving it, until the proposal was made that I be a consultant on the scientific work of the laboratory. My interest in this field of science is great enough to have caused me to be willing to accept the burden of receiving classified information in order to be of assistance to you in connection with this scientific program.
I accepted the informal invitation to attend the seminar on modern chemistry because of the feeling that this activity in August would be of value in connection with my later service as a consultant. While your letter is not explicit on the point, it gives me the impression that you are not planning to press the request for security clearance. If this is right, I believe that it would be wise for me to give up the idea of having an Oak Ridge connection.
Our work is going along very well here, I think. We believe that we have discovered the principal structural characteristic of many globular proteins - that is, the principal way in which the polypeptide chain is folded in these proteins. Also we are continuing to make good progress in getting a better understanding of the nature of sickle cell anemia.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling

Mr. R. A. Wallace
Branch Manager, Adohr Milk Co.
800 South Arroyo Parkway
Pasadena, Calif.
Dear Mr. Wallace:
I submit herewith my claim for damages for re-imbursement to the extent of $75.00 for our cocker spaniel dog which was killed on December 25, 1949, by being run over by your delivery truck, in the driveway on our property, just by the rear of our house at 3500 Fairpoint Street, Pasadena 8.
The dog was purchased as a 6-weeks old puppy from Mrs. Mary Burns, 368 Highland Avenue, Pasadena, in August, 1949, for the sum of $25.00. During his lifetime the sum of $23.00 was incurred for him as expenses at the McBride Animal Hospital, Foothill Extension, Pasadena. His value at the time when he was killed has been appraised at $75.00. I am accordingly requesting reimbursement in the sum of $75.00.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling:W
