- Letter from B. H. Sage to LP, cc: W.N. Lacey, LP, and Ch.E.(2), RE: Explains that he and Dr. Lacey do not think that it would be in the best interest of the students or the Institute for the admission of all undergraduate students who have completed the applied chemistry option and who have received a B.S. in Science to be admitted to fifth-year work. Explains that the facilities are limited, therefore they would only be able to accommodate 12 students in the 5th year course each year. - Letter from George A. Baitsell to H.J. Muller informing him that his article was published in the January issue as scheduled and that he has received a copy. Says that the second part of the publication will be printed later in the year due to the heavy technical issues that might lose the readers interest. Dear Dr. Butler:
I think that the idea, mentioned in your letter of December 23, about a meeting in New York City on atomic energy with a sub-title such as "For War or Peace under Security Restrictions or with Academic Freedom" is a very good one, but I also think that it would be difficult to arrange a program because it is hard to get suitable speakers.
I do not know if Lilienthal could be persuaded to speak, but I am rather doubtful, since he has not yet left his job. I feel sure that Vannevar Bush and Karl Compton would refuse. Probably Dr. Morrison would accept the invitation. As to myself, I am afraid that my schedule for the next few months is already too full to permit me to plan to come. I am, in fact, having trouble even answering my letters, which is why my answer to your letter is delayed.
Perhaps you could get Charles Coryell, at M.I.T., or Victor Weisskopf, also at M.I.T. Either one of then would be excellent.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
