October 5, 1949
Dr. J. D. Bernal
Birkbeck College
London, England
Dear Sage:
Do you remember that over twenty years ago - or perhaps just about twenty years ago - you sent me crystals of eta-bronze and epsilon-bronze, in order that I might see whether Laue methods verified the units that you had found. I remember that I checked your units for eta-bronze, but I do not remember whether I checked your epsilon-bronze unit or not. In your note to Nature in 1928 you give the dimensions of the orthorhombic cell for epsilon-bronze, Cu3Sn, as a0 = 4.38 Å, b0 = 5.55 Å, and c0 = 38.1 Å, the last cell dimension being eight times that for the pseudo unit.
Recently we have been working on these crystals, and we have now succeeded in determining the structure of eta-bronze. However, the two crystals, from the specimen provided by you, that have been photographed so far both were found to have c0 = 47.2 Å, which is ten times the pseudo unit, rather than eight times. The structure that has been determined for these crystals correspondingly repeats after ten pseudo units along c.
We are not certain now as to whether a mistake was made in your original investigation, or whether eta-bronze occurs in two forms. I am writing to ask you if you could check up on your earlier work, perhaps remeasuring the earlier photographs, if you still have them at hand. Perhaps, if you still have some of the original crystals, you would be willing to mail them to us. As mentioned above, the work done so far has been with use of crystals that you sent me a long while ago.
When I say we in this letter, I mean principally Dr. David Shoemaker, whom you may have met. He was in England a year and a half ago - he spent his year as a Guggenheim Fellow principally in Copenhagen in Bohr’s institute.
For a while we thought that we knew the structure of epsilon-bronze, Cu6Sn5 also, but this work has bogged down, at any rate for the time being.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely Yours
Linus Pauling:W
cc: Dr. Shoemaker

Dear Dr. Harris:
I am interested to read your letter of September 29, in which you suggest that universities agree to increase the number of postgraduate students only when more professors are available.
Perhaps it would be worth while for the universities to go on a strike in this way. I don't know whether you are proposing that the professors form an organization and refuse to work unless fewer postgraduate students are admitted, or whether you are proposing that the administrators take this action. Some state universities are required by law to admit all qualified students (residents of the state) who apply.
You no doubt know that the suggestion that you make about restricting the number of graduate students runs counter to the recommendations in both the Bush report and in the Steelman report. The policy seems to me to be similar to that which has been followed in some parts of the world of handling the problem of the shortage of elementary schools by having a large fraction of the children fail to attend school, rather than by increasing the number of schools.
Yours truly,
Linus Pauling:W

Dear Dr. Crooks:
I enclose a report on the x-ray analysis of Chloromycetin. This work was carried out by Dr. J. D. Dunitz, Arthur Amos Noyes Fellow in chemical research in our laboratory. Dr. Dunitz is a thoroughly experienced man, and his work is of high quality. Moreover, Professor Robert B. Corey and I have looked over the work while it was being carried on.
The results of the investigation are not very encouraging. The unit cell contains eight molecules and the structure is correspondingly rather complicated. It does not seem to be possible to determine the structure from the photographs of this crystal alone, by use of the available techniques at the present time.
There is however, still a reasonable chance that the structure could be determined in case that crystals of the corresponding dibromo compound were available. The diiodo compound would be still more satisfactory for this purpose. We would accordingly like to know if either one of the substances would be available for this work in the near future.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
