Dear Sage:
Do you remember that over twenty years ago - or perhaps just about twenty years ago - you sent me crystals of eta-bronze and epsilon-bronze, in order that I might see whether Laue methods verified the units that you had found. I remember that I checked your units for eta-bronze, but I do not remember whether I checked your epsilon-bronze unit or not. In your note to Nature in 1928 you give the dimensions of the orthorhombic cell for epsilon-bronze, Cu3Sn, as a0 = 4.38 Å, b0 = 5.55 Å, and c0 = 38.1 Å, the last cell dimension being eight times that for the pseudo unit.
Recently we have been working on these crystals, and we have now succeeded in determining the structure of eta-bronze. However, the two crystals, from the specimen provided by you, that have been photographed so far both were found to have c0 = 47.2 Å, which is ten times the pseudo unit, rather than eight times. The structure that has been determined for these crystals correspondingly repeats after ten pseudo units along c.
We are not certain now as to whether a mistake was made in your original investigation, or whether eta-bronze occurs in two forms. I am writing to ask you if you could check up on your earlier work, perhaps remeasuring the earlier photographs, if you still have them at hand. Perhaps, if you still have some of the original crystals, you would be willing to mail them to us. As mentioned above, the work done so far has been with use of crystals that you sent me a long while ago.
When I say we in this letter, I mean principally Dr. David Shoemaker, whom you may have met. He was in England a year and a half ago - he spent his year as a Guggenheim Fellow principally in Copenhagen in Bohr’s institute.
For a while we thought that we knew the structure of epsilon-bronze, Cu6Sn5 also, but this work has bogged down, at any rate for the time being.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely Yours
