Intermetallic compounds to be investigated
In a paper by E. Zintl and O. Treusch, Z. phys. Chem., B34., 225 (1936) abstracted in Strukturbericht, 4, p. 237, there is a discussion of a compound with composition very close to CuGa2. φ phase ,the unit of structure is tetragonal and the three atoms in the unit are put in the position 000, 1/2 1/2 x, and 1/2 l/2 y, x = 0.70, y = 0.27. The authors say that the intensities show that y is not equal to 1 - x. They contend that the copper atom is at 1/2 1/2 y.
I think the structure is probably right, except that the copper atom should be at 000, and x should be equal to 1 - y, these two positions being crystallographically equivalent, and occupied by gallium atoms. With such a structure each gallium atom would have coordination number 5, somewhat similar to its environment in the element itself. Copper has coordination number 8 (or 12, if a rather long distance between neighboring copper atoms is considered to be significant).
The crystals are apparently easily prepared - they show basal cleavage, and single crystal diagrams were taken by the investigators.
Because of the interesting characteristics of this structure, I suggest that you have somebody make crystals and reinvestigate the structure, in order to check on the position of the gallium atoms. I suggest also that an effort be made to obtain crystals of other compounds with the same structure, such as AgGa2.
