Dr. P.H. Emmett
Mellon Institute of Industrial Research
Pittsburgh 13, Pa.
Dear Paul:
I am very glad to have your letter of July 25, and to know that the samples of silica gel that you studied have the same surface areas and pore distributions.
I shall ask Dr. Dickey to write to you separately. I believe that he can send you samples of the dyes in order that you can verify that the gels that you used have specificity. I do not know whether the decay of specific properties goes on so rapidly that they would already have lost this specificity, but he can give you some information on that point.
I was sorry to miss you in Pittsburgh. Ava Helen was not with me - she and Crellin went directly through to Boston, where I visited young Linus and his family later. He and Anita have a fine boy, a little over a month old now.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
