Dear Dr. Crooks:
We are about to start the x-ray investigation of Chloromycetin. Although the crystals which you sent us are so well formed that we shall certainly be able to use them for our preliminary photographs, it may be necessary in the later stages of the analysis to carry out some recrystallizations in order to prepare specimens of specific shapes for use in our intensity measurements. It would therefore assist us if you could give us some information concerning the solubility of the compound in common solvents, and perhaps suggest a method for its recrystallization. We should also like to know the density of Chloromycetin. Perhaps you can give us this information, along with any data concerning its other physical properties: melting point, indices of refraction, etc.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
