  Dear Arne:

  I was pleased to receive your letter of April 20, and to learn that you and Mrs. Tiselius had reached home safely, and that you had enjoyed your visit to the Grand Canyon and in Texas.

  It was a great experience for us to have you here, and both my wife and I had a fine time visiting Yosemite with you and riding through the San Joaquin valley and over the mountains.

  My operation turned out to be more troublesome than I had anticipated. I had to stay in bed for five weeks (fortunately, only a few days in the hospital), but I am now getting along well. I am leaving tonight for Tampa, Florida, where I shall give an address in connection with their commencement ceremonies and shall receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Humanities. I have not been is Florida before, and am looking forward to seeing this state. I am then flying on to New York to attend a Meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Chemical Society, and I shall be home early Sunday morning.

  My wife and I are indeed looking forward to visiting Sweden again sometime. We enjoyed the two weeks that we spent there in 1947 very much, and we hope to come again, and also to visit Norway, where we have not been before, and to go back to Denmark.

  We have no new results to report on sickle cell hemoglobin. We are still having difficulties about collecting samples of sickle cell blood, but I think that the problem has been solved, and that we shall soon have enough material to permit the investigation to be completed.
