Dear Dr. Craig:
I am pleased to answer your letter of March 26, about the relation between color and chemical properties of transition elements. This is a problem that has not yet been solved, although some progress has been made in its solution. A man who is now on the staff of Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Lindsay Helmholtz, carried on work in our laboratories a couple of years ago along the lines that you mention, with some success, and I think that he will publish some of his results before long. Dr. Norman Davidson, assistant professor of chemistry in our Institute in Pasadena, is also working on the problem of the color of inorganic complexes, and Hildebrand and Pitzer at the University of California wrote a paper on this subject two or three years ago. The work that has been done, however, does not permit any simple statements to be made in explanation of the facts that you have mentioned in your letter, and I shall do no more than refer to this work. You might be interested to read the paper by Hildebrand and Pitzer (or Pitzer and Hildebrand).
I remember the question that you asked me on dissociation energies. You could find a discussion of this matter in my book THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND, Cornell University Press. This discussion was written in 1939, and it would be possible now to amplify it considerably. There is a specialized book on dissociation energies of molecules into atoms, written by an Englishman named Gaydon. The title of his book is DISSOCIATION ENERGIES.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

- Letter from W. H. Freeman, W. H. Freeman and Company to LP RE: Explains what the part of the Szmant organic manuscript they have given him represents, gives him information from Szmant about Section One and Two, wants to know if he feels the partial manuscript is modern and logically done and if it is well expressed. (Notes on the back of the last page about the manuscript read: “p1 “recently” p.3 “Ohere is a number” p1 “chem of covalent bond” no p. 3 may be premature anyway. P1. bottom “we conclude...” but this is just a name P2. I object “impossible to see” I prefer a more positive approach. bottom too vague P3. “atom- hollow sphere” why hollow? P3. Footnote confusing and unnecessary. “circular - eccentrates” confusing. P3. Poor disc n of atomic str. P4. Misuse of ion n pot e for ion energy. 6. Unusual def n of orbital. P13. 1 page on hydrogen bond- just too scant! p.21 Why give Bragg law? p22. “magnet” Why give mole ref n eq n Discussion too brief to be useful. p.25 Error in µ CH3Cl calc n.”) [Letter from LP to Freeman April 15, 1949] [Filed under LP Correspondence: 439.7]
