Dr. Paul H. Emmett
Mallon Institute of Industrial Research
Pittsburgh 13, Pa.
Dear Paul:
I was pleased to hear from you, and to learn that you were interested in the specific silica gels that Mr. Dickey has been making. I have spoken to him about the matter and he has sent you samples of some of the gels. I attach a statement from Mr. Dickey about them.
I suppose that the measurements that you would make with nitrogen would not show any significant differences among the samples - Dickey found that a dye unrelated to those he had used in the preparation - fluorescein, I think - showed the same adsorption on all of his samples. On the other hand, the powers of adsorption for hydrocarbon molecules might change with the length of the chain in a different way for different gels, in as much as it is a difference in the hydrocarbon side chain that represents the specificity of the gel.
I have been a little under the weather recently. I had a minor operation a couple of weeks ago, and recovery has been slow. I had hoped to fly to Washington yesterday, in order that I might present my paper on sickle cell anemia before the National Academy on Wednesday. However, I found it necessary to give up this trip east.
I shall look forward to seeing you in May when I come to Pittsburgh. I am planning to arrive in town in the morning, I believe, and probably to leave for Chicago on the night train, although I have not yet examined schedules. I have to be in Chicago the next day, when Debye is given the Willard Gibbs Medal. I shall look forward to seeing you then, and I hope that it will be possible for me also to say hello to Leila. Ava Helen and the children are all well.
Cordially,
