Thank you very much for your kind, letter of April 4.
I hope that the world will get safely through the period of strife and misunderstanding that it is now in. If it does so, without war, it will be only because people insist on thinking for themselves and on shaking themselves free of ideas, such as nationalism, useful in the past but are now becoming a menace. I was pleased by the speech on world federation that Chancellor Hutchins gave here a few days ago, but dismayed by the way in which the newspapers ridiculed him.
It was a great pleasure for me to be with you at the dinner in New York at which you were given the Nichols medal, and I shall look forward to seeing you again one of these days.
