Dear Dr. Nikitine:
I have been slow to answer your letter of 26 September, which reached me, together with the reprint, a little after my return to Pasadena from Europe.
I thank you for sending me your reprints. I think that the problem of molecular dichroism is a very interesting one. The question that you ask about the theory of dichroism may perhaps be partially answered by a reference to the paper on the carotenoids that Professor Zechmeister and his associates published with me. I am sending a reprint of this paper to you separately. Professor Mulliken has also published a discussion of the dependence of the absorption spectrum of molecules, especially conjugated molecules, on the direction of orientation of the electric vector of the light with respect to the axes of the molecules, in papers published in the Journal of Chemical Physics some years ago, and Professor Gilbert N. Lewis of the University of California also published some papers along similar lines.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:W
