Dr. Ricardo Carbalho Ferreira
Rua Augusta, 550
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Dear Dr. Ferreira:
I am pleased to have your letter of September 3, and I shall attempt to answer your questions.
As to the action of a molecule HCI as a Lewis acid, I would say that as a first approximation this molecule is not a Lewis acid. When hydrogen chloride is dissolved in water it ionizes, forming the hydronium ion, H30+. This hydronium does serve as a Lewis acid - or, perhaps it is better to say that the proton serves as the Lewis acid.
I think that it is entirely a matter of definition or use of terms as to whether a molecule that is able to use a hydrogen atom contained within the molecule in the formation of a hydrogen bond is to be considered as a Lewis acid or not. If it is so considered, then the ionic aspect of the resonating structure of the hydrogen chloride permits this molecule to use its proton to a small extent in the formation of hydrogen bonds - that is, in the formation of weak hydrogen bonds, and in this sense the hydrogen chloride molecule itself might be considered to be a weak Lewis acid. This whole problem is, of course, a complicated one, and it is possible to build up many conceptual systems, any one of which may be considered to be as good as another.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:ph

Dr. E. J. Crane, Editor
Chemical Abstract
The Ohio State University
Columbus 10, Ohio
Dear Dr. Cranes:
I thank you very much for your letter of September 29.
The statistics given in your table are very interesting indeed. I had, of course, surmised that the contribution that the United States has been making in the scientific fields covered by Chemical Abstracts have become more important than before, but I had not realized that we have doubled our percentage, from twenty percent in 1913 to over forty percent in 1947.
I do not think that you should worry about the future outlook for Chemical Abstracts. It is necessary for you to call our attention to the needs of Chemical Abstracts; but the work that you and your associates are doing is so important that means must be found to permit it to be carried on in just the right way. I do not think that you should be bashful about the matter.
With best regards, I am
Sincerely yours.

Dear Parents,
Everything is fine here. Gordon is still alive. Today it has been hot, wet, and muggy. It rained a little. I watered. Teena had the day off, so Linda had to try to cook. She’s OK I suppose, although not very regular with her meals.
The business at hand concerns an engine for the Fordy. I took the front fenders off last night, and while it is too bad not to have fenders, she looks very much better. Really not bad. But the engine. Rod Smythe will sell his engine for $85. The engine is a 33 V-8, he has had it rebored, new mains poured, crank ground. The price includes all accessories, heads, pan, generator, starter, intake and exhaust manifolds, muffler, carburetor, water pumps, transmission, radiator. However, pistons, rings, valves, new connecting rods, and con rod bearings must be bought. And heads remodeled. This would cost perhaps $75 more. To rebuild the present motor, the B, would cost $60. Or more, I do not know exactly. Also, the B can be sold for $55. There is a market for B’s. I would like to get his engine. I will even buy it out of my allowance, but would appreciate some assistance. Smythe will let me have it on credit, he is in no need for money. Would you please let me know what you think of this, as I would like to get to work on it? It does not seem like such a bad deal. Pretty good in fact, with all the accessories that are necessary and cost a good deal. The engine will be somewhat more powerful than a [precursor?] Mercury engine.
Linda has finished her beds, and we have put one of them up. We are having a lot of fun with Norton. I picked up Crellin on Friday night. Linda went Folk dancing Saturday with David Beadle. Say Mom, please advise what perfume to what girl. Girls are Elenor Benioff, Dagmar Benioff, Amneka Went, and Ava von Hume. Smells are: 2 noirs, Chinchilla, and Antelope. I would like a similar present for Judy [Rodekah?].
We all hope you have a wonderful time and come back soon. Love from us all,
Peter

President H. S. Rogers
Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn
99 Livingston Street
Brooklyn 2, New York
Dear President Rogers:
It is not very often that I get to see you - or even that I have occasion to write to you. I am hoping that we shall meet again one of these days, in order that we can talk about old times.
I am writing now to express my sincere appreciation of the decision that you have made about Professor Clarence F. Hiskey. I was dismayed to read in the eastern papers the charges, or rather allegations, that were made against Professor Hiskey by the Un-American Activities Committee, and then I was very encouraged to learn that you have taken the stand that the basic American principle that no man is to be considered guilty until he has been properly accused in a court of justice and found guilty is to be applied to Professor Hiskey also, and that the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn will not be influenced by slurs and sneers and unsupported charges.
It is difficult for me to believe that your stand will not receive universal approval; but if you should ever have need for support, and if I could be of help to you, please let me know.
With best personal regards, I am
Sincerely yours,
Dictated by
Linus Pauling but
signed in his absence
