Dear Dr. Pinkerton:
I have been interested to read your letter of 14 May, and have thought about the problem that you mention.
It seems to me unlikely that association occurs to any significant extent between ethyl acetate molecules, and even if association did occur I believe that dissociation would not involve any significant activation energy. Consequently I suggest that this is not the explanation of your phenomenon.
On the other hand, it seems likely that there are some states differing in energy by as much as 6 kilocalories per mole because of the difference in orientation around single bonds in the molecule, or around one of the carbon-oxygen resonating bonds. For example, the carbon-carbon bonds in the ethyl group might well show a heat of activation of 5.5 kilocalories per mole for the reaction of rotation of the methyl group through 120°. It has indeed been shown by Gordon and Giauque (J, Gordon and W. F. Giauque, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 70, 1506 (1948), that the potential barrier in ethyl chloride is 4.7 kilocalories per mole, for rotation of the methyl group through 120°. On the other hand, the trigonal symmetry of the methyl group requires that there be no difference in energy between the initial and final states for this reaction, and consequently it is not the reaction that you are interested in--moreover, the zero energy difference is not affected by changes in pressure or temperature occurring in a sound wave. Now the bond between the carbon atom of the carboxyl group and the oxygen atom to which the ethyl group is attached is a single bond with some double bond character, amounting to perhaps 25%. Accordingly an activation energy of the order of 10 kilocalories per mole might be expected for the rotation of the ethoxy group around its bonds, from the coplanar configuration trans to the acetate methyl group to the coplanar configuration cis to this group. The estimate of 10 kilocalories per mole may be a bit high, and consequently 5.5 might be acceptable. Moreover, because of the difference in nature of the methyl group and the oxygen atom (not bonded to ethyl} of the acetate group, an energy difference of about 5.5 or 6 kilocalories per mole between the cis and trans forms would be anticipated. I would suggest that the form trans the acetate methyl would be the more stable. However, I am relying upon structural arguments and my memory on this point. I do not have literature at hand, but I suggest that you look in the book by H. A. Stuart, and see what conclusion he reached about similar compounds from Kerr effect measurements.
Rotation around the bonds between the ethyl group and the carboxyl oxygen offers another alternative. However, in general, I think, the potential barrier for rotation of this sort is less than one kilocalorie per mole, and accordingly this explanation seems less likely than the other one.
I am coming to Cambridge to take part in the Barcroft Memorial Conference on hemoglobin. Perhaps it would be possible for me to have a little chat with you at that time. I shall be staying with Professor Roughton.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:par

Dear Stanley:
I was pleased to receive your letter of May 2, and to know that you are getting along well in Sweden, and have enjoyed your year there.
I am also interested to learn about the job that Professor Tiseluus has offered you for the winter 1949-50, and your plans for Mrs. Swingle and the children to remain in Sweden next year.
I think that the experience of a year with Professor Tiselius should be a valuable one for you, and that it is well worth while for you to accept appointment, if you are interested in it. Moreover, it occurs to me that there might be good reason for you to take this appointment for the year 1948-49, if it is open to you. It seems a shame for you to have to leave your family and return to Pasadena at this time. I feel sure that permission to post-pone your year in Pasadena until later could be obtained, and we are going to be so crowded during the coming year that the following year, when perhaps we shall have a new laboratory at least under construction, might be a better one.
Please let me know what your plans are.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Bob:
I am glad to have your letter, and to know how things are going. I wish that I could see the N.F.I.P. exhibit - I am sure that it is first-rate. Despite the inroads on research time, the work is probably worth while.
I have written to Badger, asking him to talk with you about the possibility of using polarized infrared radiation as an aid in the structure determination.
The drawings that Mrs. Reinecke has been making will be hare just in time, if they arrive in a week or so.
I have continued to work on my theory of metals, and have been doing nothing about proteins. However, I am looking forward to being back home, and to thinking about that subject again.
Sincerely yours,

Dear Mom and Dad
Here is our 25th anniversary present to you, is a check which ought to just about cover the
cost and installation of a Hotpoint dishwasher. Ours has been in operation for a few weeks now,
and we consider it a marvelous invention!
We're already considering a 50th anniversary present for you it will be fairly close to our
own 25th year of wedded bliss, so we ought to have quite a celebration!
Much love to you both and may your future life be as happy as the past!

Mr. F. C. Romeyn:
N. V. Philips's Laboratory
Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Dear Mr. Romeyn
I have been interested to read your suggestion that the chromium modification with the large radius is a hydride, perhaps Cr2H.
However, I do not think that this is possible as an explanation. If the formula were Cr2H, chromium would use one-half of a valance in satisfying the hydrogen valency, leaving 5 ½ valencies for the chromium-chromium bond. The difference between this and 6 is so small, however, that the increase in radius of chromium that would result would be only about 12% of that observed. That is, the radius of chromium would be expected to increase from, say, 1.267 Å to 1.278 Å, and not to the much larger value 1.357 Å.
I shall hope to see you in Amsterdam next month.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:par

The Institute for Advanced Study
Princeton, New Jersey
Dear Frank:
I am pleased to have your letter of June 25. We are hoping to see you before going back to California. We shall probably arrive on Monday, August 30, and I think we might well come directly to Princeton, and stay over night, in case that a reservation can be made for us at the Inn. Then on the next day we would go on to Washington, where I shall attend the meeting of the American Chemical Society.
We have all enjoyed being at Oxford very much. I have been kept very busy - I found, with surprise, when I counted up the number of one-hour lectures that I had given, in addition to my regular Oxford lectures, that they amounted to 39. I have spoken, at many universities in England and Scotland, before the Chemical society, the British Undergraduate School of Medicine, and other such groups. I gave three Scott Lectures for the Physics Department at Cambridge, three lectures at University College, London, the Sir Jesse Boot Lecture at Nottingham, a Beason Lecture at Newcastle, the Liversiege Lecture for the Chemical Society, the first Lyell Lecture here at Oxford.
Everyone is very pleased that Notestein is to be Eastman Professor year after next. He is very well liked in England.
Our son Linus and his wife a arrived two days ago. They are going on to Switzerland soon, and we hope to see them there also. Linus will be at Harvard Medical School next year.
Sincerely yours,
[Linus Pauling]

Dear Dr. Singer:
I have just got worried about your manuscript. I haven't written to you because I have nothing much to say about the manuscript, but it occurred to me that you might want the drawings back, and so I am returning them with the manuscript herewith.
I hope I haven't held the paper up.
I shall look forward to learning about the progress that you have made on the Rothen problem when I get back home, September 19. One idea that has occurred to me is that instead of using metal slides it might be possible to use thin sheets of mica, perhaps treated with a uranium salt in order to make the protein stick. There is a paper by Polansky in a recent Nature, in which it is shown that layers of mica uniform to one half unit (10 Ǻ. Thickness) can be obtained by cleavage.
Also, I thought that perhaps some results could be got by coating the positive layer of protein with metal at a small angle of inclination from one side. This ought to cover the one side of protein molecules, leaving the other side bare, and so perhaps the slides treated in this way would still absorb nearly half of the antibody.
It will be a pleasure to talk with you about this work and other work that you might be interested to carry on.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling:par
