Dear Mr. Romeyn
I have been interested to read your suggestion that the chromium modification with the large radius is a hydride, perhaps Cr2H.
However, I do not think that this is possible as an explanation. If the formula were Cr2H, chromium would use one-half of a valance in satisfying the hydrogen valency, leaving 5 ½ valencies for the chromium-chromium bond. The difference between this and 6 is so small, however, that the increase in radius of chromium that would result would be only about 12% of that observed. That is, the radius of chromium would be expected to increase from, say, 1.267 Å to 1.278 Å, and not to the much larger value 1.357 Å.
