- Letter (with copy) from LP to Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP RE: Asks for the 13 reprints Roger Williams sent on, asks her to ask for several other reprints and look for a few in his office, and tells her what his next few lectures are so she can find related reprints. (Notes along the side in pencil) [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Oxford University, [re: Eastman professorship and residency in Oxford] 1946-1948), #299.8]
- Letter (with copy) from Priscilla Roth, Secretary to LP to Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP at Caltech RE: Asks for a batch of envelopes to be sent, tells the specific kinds, and says that the Schomakers have arrived to stay for 10 days. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Oxford University, [re: Eastman professorship and residency in Oxford] 1946-1948), #299.8]
- Letter from LP to Books and Careers RE: Requests a copy of Garrod's “Inborn Errors of Metabolism” from 1923 or earlier. [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #140.12, file:(G: Correspondence, 1948)]
- Letter from LP to C. Gurney, Ministry of Supply, Royal Aircraft Establishment, RE: Sends comments on the excerpts from the manuscript by Gurney. Specifically comments on the resonance of double bonds at the surface of a diamond, noting that this type of resonance occurs in crystals such as metals, as mentioned in his paper in the March 1947 issue of JACS. Regrets he does not have the quantum mechanical calculations on hand. Suggests Gurney send the entire manuscript to him for further comment. [Letter from Gurney to LP February 25, 1948] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #140.12, file:(G: Correspondence, 1948)]
- Letter from LP to Dr. George Avery, Jr., Editor, Survey of Biological Progress, RE: Replies that he would like to review the article by Martin Kamen if that would not cause undue delay in its printing. [Letters from Avery to LP February 20, 1948, March 12, 1948] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #197.2, file:(Kamen, Michael)]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Raymond Daudel RE: LP encloses his manuscript for the symposium. He is glad to accept his offer to translate it in French. Asks that the translation be sent as soon as possible in order to rehearse beforehand. [Filed under: LP Speeches, 1948s.27]
- Letter from LP to Dr. Robert Corey. [Notes from Corey to LP February 25, 1948, April 13, 1948] [Filed under LP Correspondence: Box #67.6 file:(Corey, Robert B., 1937, 1943, 1947-1952, 1954-1957, 1960, 1965, 1967-1968, 1971)]

Dear Bob:
I am glad to learn that you are having Trueblood finish up the lysozyme film, and that Holmes is getting ready to do something about the fly’s eye.
As to Seymour Singer, I think that it would be very good to get him at work on proteins with x-ray. Swingle will be back in the fall to take over the electrophoresis and ultracentrifuge work. We do not have any arrangement with Swinger at present to continue, so far as I remember, and I do not know whether he has any commitments elsewhere or not. I think that he would probably want to continue with some film work, but he might well be able to have a student or assistant working on this, under his supervision, at the same time that he is doing the x-ray work. This is a matter that you would have to discuss with him.
I suggest that you talk with him, and make him an offer of a job as Senior Research Fellow for, say, three years. I am not sure what his salary is now, but I would suggest about $4,200 would be about right. You may take this as my recommendation, plus or minus $300, according to your judgment. I think that it would be wise to get this matter settled right away.
I am glad to learn that Jerry is going to the ASX-RED meeting in New Haven, and also that you are planning to take Ken Trueblood to the NFIF exhibit. Also I am very glad that Roger Hayward is doing so well on the model work. I think that we need to keep him as a member of our group.
I have been having wonderful success in my development of a theory of metals. I think that it has really been very much worthwhile for me to get away for this period of time, under circumstances favorable to my thinking over questions and trying to find their solution. The problem of metals has been on my mind for a number of years, and I haven’t been able to leave it alone, so it is a good thing that I have now managed to get it solved.
Best wishes to you for a rapid recovery. Use good judgment in taking care of yourself.
Cordially yours,
Linus Pauling:par
