Dear Dave:
I am glad that you have accepted appointment as Senior Fellow in Research. It might be a good idea for you to get any information you can about x-ray cameras for use with alloys. If a specially well made camera were available commercially, we might buy it and ship it to Pasadena.
I doubt that you should teach under your Carbon and Carbide appointment, but I think we might be able to change your appointment so that part of your salary was paid directly from Institute funds, thus permitting you to teach a course, the nature of which we can decide later.
I suggest that we not bother Dr. Bell for living quarters, but rather have Miss Roth take care of it. You might send me a detailed statement of your plans.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

P.S. Dear Dave:
We are just getting settled after a good trip over. We were 12 hours late in leaving N.Y. because of a blizzard, and even after waiting twelve hours the ship went off only partially filled. The "Queen Mary" is noted for rolling, but otherwise it was not rough. A car met us at the dock, and in two and a half hours we were here.
Dr. Pauling has asked me to see about a room for you. As soon as I know when you're arriving and a bit more about Oxford, I will be glad to do this. It is wonderful here and I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit.
Best wishes for the New Year.
