Aydelotte's house
Princeton, New Jersey
10 PM January 30, 1947
Dear love:
The ride down, with Schaffuer, Thorfin, and the secretary (Mrs Payson), was moderately good- weather fine, but highway uninteresting. Thorfin and I, in the back seat, talked about Martin's new and wonderful chromatographic technique for amino acids.
On arrival we stopped to register at the Nassau Tavern, and then went to the Institute for Advanced Study for lunch. As we went toward the private dining room we passed the Aydelottes. They spoke to me: Mrs. Aydelotte said how well I looked, and Frank asked about Oxford, saying he hoped that we could go for the whole year. I said I was afraid we couldn't, and he said to let him arrange it with Oxford. Then he took me to one side and asked me about my health. I told him that I worked hard and was in a steady state. He asked if my health would permit me to be his successor as Director of the Institute. I said yes- but that, while the great job attracted me, I felt that it would be hard to pull myself away from my own scientific work. (They had first asked me to stay overnight with them, and I had agreed.) Our meetings with Einstein, who seems well, lasted all day and evening, and I have just reached Aydelotte's house, by

taxi from the Tavern. They have gone to bed- I let myself in by a key they had given me. I'll have breakfast with them in the morning, and possibly learn more. Perhaps the Institute should be moved to Pasadena.
I'm lonesome for you. The next meeting of the Emergency Committee probably will be in Williamsburg- the three days following the Academy meeting. We should have fun there.
Love from
Your old
Paddy
