Dr. Frank Aydelotte
The Institute for Advanced Study
Princeton, New Jersey
Dear Frank:
I thank you for your letter of July 11, with its advice about the procedure in selecting the subject of my Oxford lectures.
I am writing now to say that, as my wife has thought more about the matter of our lodging in Oxford, she has become more strongly convinced that it would be better for us, under the circumstances that probably will prevail, to live in a hotel or similar establishment than to have the obligation of running our own household. We are accordingly perfectly satisfied with the proposal that we not live in Eastman House.
There is one suggestion which I would like to make, for the consideration of the Eastman Trust. It is that it would be fine if an automobile could be purchased by the Eastman Trust and made available to the Eastman Professor during his stay in England, under whatever financial arrangement seems best. For example, I would be willing to pay the cost of the automobile, with the plan of leaving it for the next Eastman Professor, receiving in return a sum equal to its estimated value at that time. I know that it is possible to travel around England conveniently by train, but I would like to have the opportunity of getting the more intimate contact with the English people and countryside that travel by automobile would permit.
Helen and I are looking forward to seeing you and Mrs. Aydelotte next month.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling

Mrs. Lucile Jenkins
Estacada, Oregon
Dear Lucile:
Thank you for sending me Granddad's watch. I had been hoping for a long time to get it from you, but now I have decided to wait a while, until the jewelers are less busy, before having it repaired.
I am sorry to hear about Aunt Anna. I hope that she is not leading an unhappy life.
The question that you asked about material for a popular talk about my work is a hard one. I am sending separately a reprint of the Harrison Howe lecture which I gave at Rochester a few months ago, which you might find useful. Most of the papers that I have published have been pretty technical. In a short while we shall have reprints of the Willard Gibbs address, which I shall also send on to you.
I am sending under separate cover some wooden balls and rods to be used in making molecular models. You can look in "The Nature of the Chemical Bond" to find some simple molecules to illustrate. Chloroform, of course, is a good one — you take one of the black balls, attach to it three long rods and one shorter one, put a yellow ball on the shorter rod (for hydrogen) and three other balls, perhaps red, on the three longer rods, for the three chlorine atoms.
Jeff and Sylvia were through here last week; we were glad to see them. We all went up to the Sierra Madre mountains, just north of our house, driving about thirty miles to get into the pines, at 6,000 feet elevation.
We also spent a day at the beach with them.

Expects to be in Los Angeles the 22nd, though he is meeting with Gilluly of UCLA and Woodford of Pomona. Explains that he has been trying to reach Latimer to find out what has become of Seaborg's manuscript, but he has been unable to reach him. Gives LP two remarks from Rollefson when Freeman told him he was starting a new publishing house, which were that he wished they were publishing his book, and they were about to drop the Hildebrand text since it lacked descriptive matter. Says he is not surprised that Macmillan has run out of Latimer and Hildebrand's reference book, as they seem to be bringing out big new titles even though they cannot supply enough copies of those already on their list. SUBJECTInternuclear distances
With one possible exception the internuclear distances given by Herzberg for CaO, BaO, ZrO and CaCl are quite impossible.
The distance for CaO in the lowest observed state (1.75A) is in good agreement with the vibrational frequency. There is, however, no definite assurance that this state is the ground state.
In the other cases I have made rough estimates of distance from the vibrational frequency, as follows:
re (A)
BaO (2.02) ---- low for Ba-O = 2.64
ZrO 1.76 OK for Zn-O = 2.11 (Triple bond
CaCl 2.10 (probably not very accurate) low
VO (1.65) OK for V-O = 1.88
The numbers in parentheses correspond to the lowest observed state, which is not necessarily the ground state In the other cases the ground state is said to be definitely known. The estimated distances may be good to ± 0.02 A.
R.M.B.
If the distance for PbO is correct it seems to me that the distance for SnO is a trifle large, perhaps by 0.03 Å.

Dear M. Gallais:
I was interested to read your paper on the relation between strength of acids and bases and electronegativity of the element.
I think that the relation that you point out has validity for the case where the number of hydrogen atoms equals the number of oxygen atoms, and I am very glad to learn about your observation.
A few years ago, in a text book which I wrote for use by our students (my course in general chemistry), I pointed out a simple rule connecting the strength of an oxygen acid with the difference between the number of oxygen atoms and the number of hydrogen atoms. I do not have available an extra copy of this book, but I shall publish the rule in a short while, and send you a copy of the manuscript at that time, or perhaps an excerpt from my general chemistry text.
Sincerely yours,
Linus Pauling
